In a case we’ve been following closely here, finally, what appears to be one step in the direction of justice for Bowe Bergdahl.

As Fox News reports:

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s high-profile desertion case was referred for trial by court-martial on Monday, in a blow to his defense team which had urged a lower-level referral.

Bergdahl was released from captivity last year in exchange for five Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay. He was later charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, accused of abandoning his post before he was captured.

U.S. Army Forces Command announced Monday that both charges are being referring to a general court-martial.

An arraignment hearing date at Fort Bragg, N.C., has not yet been set.

Eugene Fidell, Bergdahl’s attorney, said the convening authority did not follow the advice of the preliminary hearing officer who had recommended Bergdahl’s case be moved only to a special misdemeanor-level military court.

Fidell said in a statement Monday that he had hoped the case would not go in this direction.

Bergdahl, of Hailey, Idaho, was held by the Taliban for nearly five years after he walked off his post in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009.

The trade of five Taliban leaders for his release fueled tensions between the Obama administration and Congress, as some lawmakers said they were not properly informed of the deal — and said the trade itself raised security concerns.

We have written extensively here about the Bergdahl case, and the inexplicable and FUBAR way this has been handled by the Obama administration. While six U.S. soldiers died searching for this deserter, Bergdahl has been treated as a hero by the Obama administration.

While the announcement of the court martial is positive news, we will have to watch, with wary eyes, how this all plays out. As Col. West wrote previously, the left has already teed up “mitigating factors” they argue should be considered as part of Bergdahl’s fate. They’ve turned this deserter — a coward who brought onto himself the suffering he endured at the hands of the Taliban — into a victim. And, much like the FBI investigation into the Hillary Clinton email scandal, we will be alert for political influence onto these proceedings for justice. As Col. West wrote previously:

If anyone believes President Obama wants a long, drawn-out court case with a life imprisonment verdict for someone he traded for five senior Taliban leaders, you’re misguided. Obama wants Bergdahl’s case to go away, with minimal consequence.

But for today, we can be encouraged at this first step!
