In what is bound to disappoint many Americans, President-elect Donald Trump has just announced he “doesn’t wish to pursue” charges against former presidential rival and secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

Via The New York Post:

President-elect Donald Trump won’t subject Hillary Clinton to a criminal inquiry — instead, he’ll help her heal, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

“I think when the president-elect who’s also the head of your party … tells you before he’s even inaugurated he doesn’t wish to pursue these charges, it sends a very strong message, tone and content, to the members,” Kellyanne Conway told the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” who first reported that the president-elect would not pursue his campaign pledge to “lock up” Clinton, his Democratic opponent.

“Look, I think, he’s thinking of many different things as he prepares to become the president of the United States, and things that sound like the campaign are not among them,” Conway, who is now on the Trump transition team, said in her interview.

She continued: “I think Hillary Clinton still has to face the fact that a majority of Americans don’t find her to be honest or trustworthy, but if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that’s a good thing.”

Here’s a breakdown of the scandal that Hillary needs help healing from:

While Trump had (rightly) leveled heavy criticism against “Crooked Hillary” on the campaign trail for her email scandal and Clinton Foundation pay-for-play while she was secretary of state. He had even gone so far as to declare he would have his attorney general appoint a special prosecutor to the case — and, famously, retorted that she’d “be in jail” if he were in charge.

And while I (Michelle Jesse) personally must admit to being surprised and even disappointed by the prospect that Crooked Hillary may never be sporting that orange jumpsuit, after further pause, I can understand Trump’s potential reasoning here. Helping Hillary “heal,” as Kellyanne Conway suggests, is one thing. But how about helping America heal? And while we might wish to see justice served to Hillary Clinton, is that the best use of our resources to move this nation forward? Furthermore, that type of all-consuming investigation will most certainly further entrench various factions within Congress — dividing over the past, rather than trying to unite for the future.

One could apply a similar argument to the American people in general.

Even if one buys into this line of thinking, there still would remain the nagging issue of laws applying only to certain classes of people — while the “ruling” class gets off scot free for breaking the laws for which “lower-level” Americans would be jailed. Perhaps there some way to hold her accountable — and drain the Clinton swamp once and for all — without making it the central focus of his administration and Capitol Hill.

Of course, Trump may not make it a central focus to go after Hillary; even so, his Justice Department can continue the investigations and let justice take its course. And it could be that that’s exactly what Trump has in mind.

We must all wish President-elect Trump much support and success in the monumental task he faces in the name of all of us.

What do y’all think of this morning’s news that Trump doesn’t wish to prosecute Hillary?
