BOOM: Ted Cruz Publisher Takes BOLD Action Against New York Times for Bestseller Omission

Naturally, eyebrows — and ires — were raised when Politico reported the New York Times informed HarperCollins this week that it will not include Ted Cruz’s new biography on its forthcoming bestsellers list, despite the fact that the book has sold more copies in its first week than all but two of the Times’ bestselling titles.

Likewise, eyes rolled when the Gray Lady issued a #lame explanation for the omission, claiming “an overwhelming preponderance of evidence was that sales were limited to strategic bulk purchases.” Yeah, no, we’re not quite buying that, NYT.

Now, eyes are popping at the bold move by Cruz’s publishers, Harper Collins, to publicly push back against the all-powerful Times. Essentially, Harper Collins is calling B.S. on the Times. As BuzzFeed reports, this is “an exceedingly rare move for any large publisher” — a testament, perhaps, to the egregiousness of the Times’ action and flimsiness its excuse?

As BuzzFeed explains:

Publishing giant HarperCollins is publicly pushing back against the New York Times’ claim that Ted Cruz’s new book, A Time For Truth, was disqualified from its bestseller list because sales were limited to “strategic bulk purchases.”

In a statement provided to BuzzFeed News, HarperCollins publicity director Tina Andreadis said the company looked into the matter and “found no evidence of bulk orders or sales through any retailer or organization.”

By publicly refuting the Times’ claim , HarperCollins is taking on one of the most influential forces in the publishing industry — an exceedingly rare move for any large publisher.

Here is Andreadis’ complete statement:

HarperCollins Publishers has investigated the sales pattern for Ted Cruz’s book A TIME FOR TRUTH and has found no evidence of bulk orders or sales through any retailer or organization.

When questioned about the omission of A TIME FOR TRUTH from its bestseller list, the New York Times told Politico, “In the case of this book, the overwhelming preponderance of evidence was that sales were limited to strategic bulk purchases.”

A TIME FOR TRUTH ranked high on other publishing industry bestseller lists including Nielsen Bookscan (#4), a subscription service that tracks the vast majority of book sales in America, The Wall Street Journal (#4) and Barnes and Noble (#7). All these outlets omit bulk orders books from their rankings.

Of course, we’ve all become accustomed to the New York Times’ blatant liberal bias. Yet, even within that context, the exclusion of Ted Cruz’s book — given the numbers — seems particularly bold and transparent. If the measure of a conservative candidate’s strength is the vociferousness of the liberal media’s attempts to smear or dismiss him, Ted Cruz is indeed a candidate to heed.

Kudos to Harper Collins for taking the New York Times to task on this. Holding our liberal media accountable is a full-time —and sometimes, seemingly futile — endeavor, but critical to taking back this republic.
