Democrats are applauding California Governor Jerry Brown’s signature today on a bill that will allow the state to automatically register millions of residents to vote, using their DMV records. The move automatically opens up voting to 6.6 million Californians.
Some are calling it “state-sanctioned voter fraud.”
As reported by ThinkProgress.org:
On Saturday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that will allow the state to automatically register millions of residents to vote, using their DMV records.
Starting in 2016, every eligible California citizen who goes to a DMV office to get a driver’s license or renew one will be instantly registered to vote, unless he or she chooses to opt out.The new “motor voter” law is just one of several steps aimed at addressing California’s dismally low election participation rate — one of the worst in the nation. Just over 42 percent of eligible voters turned out in last fall’s election. In Los Angeles County, just 31 percent of registered voters cast a ballot. Automatic registration is expected to particularly benefit voters of color. Currently, only 62.8 percent of Latino and 50.7 percent of Asian-American residents are registered in California. Latinos, who recently surpassed whites to become the largest demographic group in the state, have the lowest participation rate: just 28 percent of them cast ballots in 2014.
Cristóbal Alex, the president of the non-partisan group Latino Victory Project, wrote an op-ed that the new law “comes at a time when our voices are not being heard.”
“As we’ve seen, our country is at a crossroads, and the next election will present us with a choice between old-fashioned anti-immigrant bigotry and an opportunity to make this country more inclusive,” he wrote. “Imagine what would happen if we passed this law, registering 4 million California Latinos to vote in one fell swoop. That’s enough to dramatically change the landscape of the next election, forcing candidates to focus on issues that affect the Latino community.”
There’s just one TEENSY problem with this. The California Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has acknowledged it can’t distinguish citizens from non citizens in its current database. You may recall that beginning this year, California began issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants — and received a tremendous response. If it’s is unable to separate out these non citizens in the database, California will be registering illegal immigrants with driver’s licenses, as well as legal immigrants who are permanent residents (but not citizens) and refugees who do not yet have their citizenship. Additionally, the DMV has no way to identify felons who aren’t allowed to vote in California and part-time residents (with driver’s licenses) who may be registered to vote in other states.
Catherine Engelbrecht, founder of True the Vote — the nation’s largest nonpartisan, voters’ rights and election integrity organization, says this:
“This bill is terrible. It makes an already bad situation much, much worse. The California New Motor Voter Program promises to improve voter participation by automatically registering CA-DMV customers to vote. What’s been conveniently overlooked is that California’s registration databases lack the necessary safeguards to keep non-citizens off the voter rolls. Now, legislators are quite literally asking Gov. Brown to intentionally, systematically, push millions of non-citizens onto California’s voter rolls.”
According to the ACLU, approximately 3 MILLION noncitizens residing in California could be registered upon enforcement of the bill.
It’s no wonder that California Democrats have pushed this through, as they will be the ones to benefit from a large swath of non-citizens voting in the next election.
But this willful violation of our law — and the rights of every legal American citizen — is outrageous. Between the liberally-biased media and Democrats willing to twist and trample our laws to their advantage, we’ve got a tough battle ahead of us to reclaim our republic.
