While many conservatives were deeply hoping Texas Senator Ted Cruz would be the Republican nominee for president, it was not to be.

While Cruz has been a strong voice for conservative values in the Senate, his support among many Republicans wobbled after his performance at the Republican convention where he couldn’t bring himself to openly endorse Donald Trump.

Nonetheless, since the Senate has reconvened, Cruz has taken action all conservatives cheers, including introducing legislation for term limits and pressing the State Department to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Cruz has also mentioned he’d be very open to a spot on the Supreme Court but so far, his name hasn’t appeared on any short list — at least not recently.

So will he have an easy time holding on to his Senate seat come the 2018 midterms? One things for certain — he will have challengers.

The Hill reports, “Rep. Michael McCaul, the Texas Republican who backed Trump and was considered as a potential Department of Homeland Security nominee, has blasted Cruz for his late endorsement and has floated a primary challenge of his own.

And Matthew Dowd, a former aide to President George W. Bush, told the Tribune earlier Thursday that he’s thinking about mounting an independent challenge.

And on the Democrat side, Texas Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke expects to challenge Republican Sen. Ted Cruz for his Senate seat in 2018, the Texas Tribune reported.

“It’s very likely that I will run for Senate in 2018,” the 44-year-old O’Rourke told the outlet.

O’Rourke added that he feels “encouraged” by the feedback he’s received as he considers a bid.

We’ve barely digested the results of the 2016 election — heck, Donald Trump hasn’t even taken office — and 2018 seems a very long way off. But in the political world, it’s just around the corner.

What do you think? Will Cruz cruise to reelection?
