We’re toast: Lebanese journalist says “the West has capitulated” to Iran

We’ve written here on more than one occasion about the “Neville Chamberlain” moment we’re living through with regards to the so-called negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

On Sunday, in an interview with the New York Times, Obama said this preliminary deal was a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to curb the spread of nuclear weapons in a dangerous region.

I find the choice of words a bit unnerving, particularly when we’re talking about nuclear weapons and their capacity to end so many lifetimes. We might never get another chance in this lifetime, if Iran has its way – particularly if we’re living in Israel.

Still, in his interview Obama emphasized to Israel that “we’ve got their backs” in the face of Iranian hostility.

The problem, Mr. President, is that Iran will be attacking Israel from the front.

Obama said, “What we will be doing even as we enter into this deal is sending a very clear message to the Iranians and to the entire region that if anybody messes with Israel, America will be there.”

Ok, but once Israel is bombed, it’s kind of a moot point, right?

And anyway, that’s not the way the rest of the Middle East sees it. After the preliminary deal was announced, the editor or a pro-Hezbollah newspaper in Lebanon published an article titled “The West has Capitulated.

Can’t get much clearer than that.

In his article Ibrahim al-Amin wrote:

Only those who go through life with their eyes shut say that conflicts are resolved through [diplomatic] settlements. What happened yesterday in Lausanne was the outcome of an intense conflict that has been ongoing since the Soviet Union collapsed and the West, led by the United States, took over the management of the world since there was nobody to oppose or deter it. The outcome of this conflict is simple: the West has capitulated! The real tragedy for the enemies of Iran around the world (and by the way that means you and me) was that they heard Obama end his speech yesterday with the words “Khamenei, I am at your service!”

Oh, great.
