After we worked so hard to get a GOP majority in the Senate and maintain the majority in the House, we thought things would get better, right?
Backroom deals are still being cut to push through legislation and the latest episode prompted Senator (and presidential hopeful) Ted Cruz to take the floor in the chambers and slam majority leader Mitch McConnell as a liar.
As the Washington Post reports, Prompting the outburst was McConnell’s move to prepare amendment votes on a must-pass transportation bill. After senators voted to consider the bill, McConnell set up votes on two controversial issues — a repeal of the Affordable Care Act and a reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. Not included were such issues as immigration enforcement and cuts to Planned Parenthood funding, for which Cruz and other conservatives had pushed.
In his floor speech, Cruz said, “There is a profound disappointment among the American people because we keep winning elections, and then we keep getting leaders who don’t do anything they promised. We’ve had a Republican majority in both houses of Congress now for about six months. . . . This Senate operates exactly the same, the same priorities.”

“I asked the majority leader very directly: What was the deal that was just cut?” Cruz recalled. “The majority leader was visibly angry with me that I would ask such a question, and the majority leader looked at me and said, ‘There is no deal, there is no deal, there is no deal.’ Like Saint Peter, he repeated it three times.”It is great to see an elected official actually make a stand publicly and call out the double-dealing and cronyism rampant on Capitol Hill. Sadly, I don’t think it’s going to make much difference in the short term.
I personally have two key premises – both very discouraging – which every day appear to be confirmed by the actions and policies we see emanating from Washington.
1. Regardless of party, Republican or Democrat, those in power will do whatever they must do to remain in power.
2. President Obama is an Islamist sympathizer who is doing everything he can to destroy this country.
Everyone always asks, why would the president do the things he’s doing? Why cut this “deal” with Iran? Why release tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens back onto our streets? Why change the oath of citizenship so new citizens aren’t required to promise they’ll defend this nation? Why embrace Cuba and shun Israel? Why send out “warm regards” to the Muslim community only hours after four marines were gunned down in Chatanooga?
All I have to say is, see number 2 above. Then it all makes perfect sense.
