They were just planning on enjoying a night out before the new school year, but then the unthinkable happened at the movies.

However, when the lone gunman began shooting, two amazing women summoned up the courage and presence of mind to act.

According to The Advocate, Ali Viator Martin and Jena Legnon Meaux, teachers at Jeanerette Senior High, had gone to the movies together.

As ABC News reports, when the shots rang out one of the teachers heroically jumped in front of a colleague to shield her and was able to pull the fire alarm to alert authorities despite being wounded, according to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

“Her friend literally jumped over her, and in her account actually saved her life,” Jindal said at a press conference, after he visited with victims at a hospital. “If she hadn’t done that … that bullet, she believed it would have hit her in the head.”

Incredibly, both teachers were shot, but that was not enough to stop one woman’s heroism.

“Even though she was shot in the leg, she had the presence of mind to pull the
fire alarm to help save other lives,” Jindal said.

According to Iberia Parish Schools Superintendent Dale Henderson, it was Martin who was able to pull the fire alarm. Both women were shot in the leg and Martin has been released from the hospital while Meaux is expected to be released sometime today.

In the midst of terrible tragedy, it is even more amazing to see such courageous action. These women are true heroes.

Wouldn’t it be great if President Obama gave them a Rose Garden reception, just like he did to honor that other hero, Bowe Bergdahl? Riiiight.
