We are still many days away from the first primary vote being cast, but it’s clear Republicans still have a lot of thinking to do.

“Ben Carson has surged into the lead in the Republican presidential race ahead of Donald Trump for the second time in a new poll, as reported by the Daily Mail.

According to the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released on Monday night, Carson has the support of 29 per cent of GOP primary voters – his best result in a national survey yet.

He was followed by Trump at 23 per cent, Marco Rubio with 11 per cent, Ted Cruz at 10 per cent and Jeb Bush with eight per cent.

The other candidates in the race polled at less than three per cent.”

The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted between October 25 and 29 so it includes data from both before and after last week’s CNBC debate. Most national polls have continued to show Trump as the leader, but Carson has topped the list four times in Iowa.

Candidates at the bottom of the heap will have a very steep climb to keep their campaigns going.

While representatives from most of the campaigns met privately last Sunday and decided to take greater control of the process – negotiating directly with broadcasters about the format – I can’t believe distributing questions evenly and allowing opening and closing statements will help candidates like Bobby Jindal, Lindsey Graham, George Pataki, Mike Huckabee or Rick Santorum keep the lights on at their campaign HQ.

Being an asterisk in the poll results has to be a big hint, doesn’t it?
