Real-life sticker shock: I’m getting reamed by Obamacare

You know how it is when you read about bad news happening to other people, and you think, yeah, but that’s not going to happen to me?

Well, it IS happening to me, and it may well be happening to you very soon.

I’m getting reamed by Obamacare.

Today I received a letter from Cigna, my current health insurance provider, saying the plan President B. Hussein Obama promised me over and over I could keep…is being cancelled.

The letter says “We have decided not to offer your current health coverage again next year. Your current coverage will end on December 31, 2014.”

But Cigna very helpfully suggests a new plan that’s similar to my current plan. It will be EIGHT HUNDRED AND FOUR DOLLARS A MONTH. That’s nearly a 30 percent increase over what I’m paying now.

Also included is a “Consumer Notice” which explains the impact of Obamacare on health plan costs. I’m including it here so you can enjoy it too.

Cigna explains I’m going to have to take it up the wazoo price-wise because now health plans:

– Must offer new benefits.
– Must cover everyone even if they have preexisting medical conditions
– Must pay new taxes and fees, which add to health plan costs.
– Must charge the same health plan costs to men and women.
– Must limit how much your age can affect health plan costs.

There’s even a handy chart that breaks down the before and after differences in health plan costs for different age groups. I may be smarting from my nearly 30 percent increase, but the real pain will be felt by young men, age 21 to 29 who may realize an increase of 87.1 percent. Those lucky men age 55 to 64 may see an average increase of only 18.1 percent.

And I know our Dear Leader said the “Affordable (HA!) Care Act” would reduce health costs, but I can’t find anything on that page that looks like a reduction – not even in teeny, tiny fine print. Nope, it all just looks like a giant one finger salute to me.

What superb timing, that I should get this letter the day before Election Day, the day before President Obama’s policies are on the ballot. Of course he did his best to postpone these changes until after the midterm election, but those pesky insurance companies sent the letters out anyway.

Not that it mattered to me. I voted against his policies on the ballot early by mail – that’s assuming my vote is even accurately counted.

No, I can’t keep my plan if I like it. I probably can’t keep my doctor. And the Affordable Care Act is just an act – like so much in this administration.

So keep an eye out for your own personal nasty surprise. And feel free to share your stories with me. Misery loves company.
