Oscars host gets SLAMMED for this “joke” about non-white people

If you set your watch, it was less than one minute into host Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue at the Academy Awards when he began the first of many Donald Trump barbs throughout the evening (you can see the whole clip below).

Not unexpectedly, several acceptance speeches veered into political territory – but perhaps not as many as you’d expect.

As we wrote here earlier, a statement was read on behalf of Iranian director Asghar Farhadi who won his second Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for The Salesman, but declined to attend because of the president’s temporary ban on travel. (And then, we kid you not, the next performance was a song from the move about James Foley, who was beheaded by ISIS).

Actor Gael García Bernal compared himself to a migrant worker because he travels the world to make movies, and then said he was against walls. Hmm, wonder what his house looks like? Hint: if you get invited, don’t go to the bathroom.

So we expected Trump to get bashed, but in a room full of liberals and #OscarsSoWhite (which after last night’s wins for Moonlight, Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, and Barry Jenkins was more like #OscarsNOTSoWhite), it was particularly shocking to find liberals offended by the comments of *gasp* another liberal.

But that’s exactly what happened.

Jimmy Kimmel managed to wade into a pile of poop when he made a “joke” about un-pronounceable non-white people’s names.

After the first Oscar of the night went to Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor in Moonlight, Ali thanked his wife for “just being such a soldier through this process and for carrying me through it all,” particularly as she’d just given birth to their daughter.

Per The Telegraph, after Ali left the stage, host Jimmy Kimmel cracked what has been described as a “tasteless” joke about Ali’s surname, suggesting it must have made it difficult to choose a moniker for his daughter. “You can’t name her Amy,” he said.

Further criticism arose following an incident later in the ceremony, during a skit took place in which passengers on an open-top bus tour of Hollywood were ‘unexpectedly’ ushered into the Oscars venue and introduced to celebrities.

Kimmel spoke to an Asian woman who told him her name was “Yulari” – at which he looked confused and asked her to repeat it.

He then asked another of the tourists his name, at which he said: “Patrick – now that’s a name.”

Strangely, Kimmel has received little flak for teasing Matt Damon about appearing in a “Chinese ponytail movie.” Does anyone else find this objectionable?

Here’s the full clip…

With all of Kimmel’s opening Trump-bashing commentary. Enjoy.
