OH MY: Outrageous billboard goes up outside GOP convention

Unless you live under a rock, you are aware the Republican National Convention begins next Monday in Cleveland.

It’s going to be a heckuva show – and perhaps a showdown.

The #NeverTrump crowd is still working on how to change the rules so bound delegates can be released to “vote their conscience” in the first round.

And speaking of a showdown, as the Wall Street Journal reports, “Ohio is an open carry state and Cleveland officials said Wednesday that they will uphold the right of protesters at the Republican National Convention to carry firearms.

The group Oath Keepers said this week that they would appear at the RNC armed, while the chairman of the New Black Panther Party also said that his group may carry weapons at an event designed to protest police brutality in advance of the RNC. Event organizers of the police brutality event later said that no armed demonstrators were expected.”

Actual guns are OK, but Cleveland has banned a wide array of items inside a broad zone in downtown Cleveland around the convention site, including water guns, toy guns, knives, aerosol cans, rope, tennis balls and others.

Rumors have swirled about the convention being produced by Mark Burnett, producer of Trump’s “Apprentice” franchise and the speaker line-up even includes Tim Tebow.

But there will be plenty of entertainment in the sideshows as well. Why, it’s already starting.

This week a rather startling billboard appeared in Cleveland showing an illustration of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz in a rather amorous embrace, preparing to lock lips.

Per the Huffington Post, In the eyes of Aaron Jackson, President of Planting Peace, this high-profile move is intended as a direct response to the Republican party and the messages of hate it sends to marginalized groups ― particularly the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

“What Donald, Ted and the Republican party either fail to realize, or realize and just don’t seem to care about, is that their words and actions toward our LGBT family―especially LGBT children―have meaning and impact,” Jackson told The Huffington Post. “LGBT children hear these messages telling them they are nothing but second class citizens and are left feeling broken or ‘less than.’”

The proposed GOP platform, which will come up for ratification by delegates at next week’s convention, is one of the most anti-LGBT in history. According to CNN, it “opposes same-sex marriage rights, supports efforts to restrict bathrooms to individuals’ birth gender and protects businesses who refuse services to individuals based on religious objections to gay marriage.”

“When children are dying because of negative messages, then it’s time to change the message,” Jackson said.

Children are dying? Because a pizza parlor refuses to cater a wedding? Or because of the bathroom they have to use?

“Planting Peace calls for the immediate change in the Republican party platform with regard to our LGBT family and LGBT rights. Never again shall a negative, hateful message be uttered in the name of ‘religious freedom.’ We are calling for action that brings full, fundamental rights to the LGBT community, and a narrative that empowers LGBT people to live and love freely.”

Remember when it was just “gay” rights? How old –fashioned.

Anyway, if this billboard is any indication, next week is going to be a doozy.
