When I was growing up, children were taught “manners.” Things like saying please and thank you, sitting quietly in restaurants and movies, wiping shoes on the mat before coming inside and certainly never putting your feet on the furniture!
Clearly this is something Obama’s mother never told him.
And it’s not just any furniture. It’s the Resolute desk. According to Whitehousemuseum.org, the desk “was made from the timbers of HMS Resolute, an abandoned British ship discovered by an American vessel and returned to the Queen of England as a token of friendship and goodwill. When the ship was retired, Queen Victoria commissioned the desk from William Evenden, Royal Naval Dockyard at Chatham, England, and presented to President Rutherford Hayes in 1880.”
It has been used by every president since except Johnson, Nixon and Ford. It is a storied piece of our heritage. And it’s not a footstool.
Maybe Obama’s mom did tell him to keep his feet off the furniture, but he never listened because he was too busy doing this:
Now to be fair, mothers of other presidents were unsuccessful teaching that lesson to their sons as well:
And it’s not just Democrat mothers:
Furniture aside, I just wish we could go back to respect for the office in general. But I’d like to start with respect for the darned Constitution!
