Munich gunman was German-Iranian teen, police refuse to say it was terror attack

Yesterday, Germany and the world were rocked again by a mass shooting. In all, the attacker killed 9 and injured 16 at Munich shopping center. In the end he was killed too.

The Telegraph says, The 18-year-old German-Iranian man who opened fire in a crowded Munich shopping mall and a nearby McDonald’s, killing nine people and wounding 16 others before killing himself, has been named in reports as Ali Sonboly.

Posing as a teenage girl called ‘Selina Akim’, Sonboly is thought to have used messages posted on a fake Facebook account to lure young victims to their death with fraudulent offers of free food just hours before his murderous rampage began.

Fox News says, The suspect was… born and raised in Munich. Prosecutor Steinkraus Koch tells a news conference the suspect had a book titled: “Rampage in Head: Why Students Kill.”

Investigators also found evidence that the Munich-born suspect had suffered from psychological problems and received treatment, but details were still being confirmed, Steinkraus-Koch said.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, despite early reports indicating it appeared to be terror related.

Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae says “no evidence” of links to the Islamic State group has been found in the home and room of the Munich shooting suspect.

Andrae also told a news conference that the crime and the perpetrator had “absolutely no” link to the issue of refugees.

However, The Telegraph now says German authorities are saying he appears to be a “classic lone gunman” who may have been inspired by the Norway killer Anders Breivik.

Newspaper articles and a book on school shootings were found in the teenage shooter’s room.

Police also thought it likely that yesterday’s five-year anniversary of Anders Breivik’s attacks on the island of Utoya played a role in the attack.

“We consider this to be a classic lone gunman without political motivation,” said Thomas Steinkraus-Koch, Munich’s chief prosecutor. A link to terrorism has been ruled out.

So it appears he wasn’t a right-wing neo-Nazi type shooting specifically to protest immigrants — just a nutbag.

But he had no ties to ISIS – even though ISIS was celebrating the attack on social media, and he was of Iranian heritage.

Does this smell funny to anyone else?
