It’s so refreshing to hear from someone who’s been through the school of hard knocks, worked her way up to a successful career and can still kick some liberal tush at the age of 81.
Joan Rivers was being interviewed by anchor Fredricka Whitfield on CNN’s Newsroom to discuss her show, Fashion Police, her upcoming Broadway appearances and her new book, Diary of a Mad Diva.
Now anyone who has ever seen Joan Rivers knows her “shtick” is outspoken, politically incorrect and brutally candid. For goodness sake, it’s an ACT.
But not to Whitfield, who continually asked the sort of questions that Rivers said were more like the transcripts from the Nuremberg Trial. “Every question was an accusatory one designed to put me on the defensive. She seemed to miss the point that “Diary of a Mad Diva” is simply a very funny book and as Winston Churchill said, if you can make one person laugh, even for a minute, it’s like giving them a little vacation.”
When Whitfield pressed Rivers about the fur she’s wearing on the cover of her book, Rivers let her have it.“This whole interview is becoming a defensive interview. Are you wearing leather shoes? Then shut up.”
Shortly thereafter, Rivers walked out. It’s awesome. Here’s a woman who built a career out of humor and sarcasm being questioned by someone who thinks her humor is “mean.”
Don Rickles, come back to Vegas! Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, I’ve got a cigar waiting for you. Teach these folks to lighten up and laugh at themselves. Sheesh.
Thank you Joan for making us laugh. We will never forget you.
