Former Bush official speaks out on Trump’s Mideast speech; jaws DROP

It’s no secret there was little love between Donald Trump and Jeb Bush during the 2016 presidential campaign. Nor has the elder George W. Bush been particularly warm and fuzzy about Trump, in fact apparently commenting after the inaugural speech “that was some weird sh*t.”

But the Bush circle may be slightly warming to the president, the comments from this former advisor are anything to go by.

As The Hill reports, Elliot Abrams, who served in foreign policy positions under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, on Sunday said President Trump’s speech in Saudi Arabia successfully pushes back against the narrative that Trump is prejudiced against Islam.

“The idea that you can call him, you know, bigoted against Islam, I think, takes a big hit today. His first foreign trip, he goes to Riyadh. You have all of these visuals of him meeting with Muslim leaders, not only from that region but from around the world,” Abrams, a prominent critic of Trump during the presidential campaign, told CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.”

“I think he comes out looking better not only as presidential, but as reaching out to Muslim leaders from around the world. I think he has helped himself a lot in pushing back against the idea that the origin of his position is some kind of prejudice.”

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

Abrams during his TV appearance said he did not see a contradiction between Trump’s call to the Muslim world and the president’s proposed travel ban, which would place a temporary halt on admitting individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries.

“I think that what the president here is saying, ‘we all need to act more to protect ourselves against terrorism. It is a phenomenon that’s destroying the region and I’m going to protect my country from it,’” said Abrams.

Damn right.

So are cooler heads finally prevailing? Is maybe the Trump-bashing getting a little old for everyone? Heck, even Geraldo Rivera and Jay Leno are saying folks need to get over it and stop with the constant attacks.

Let’s hope so. The fact that we’re getting a glimmer of support from the DC establishment has to be a good sign.
