For some reason, this has not been on everyone’s radar screen, but for the last several years, the government has issued “forever” stamps commemorating the two most important festivals – or eids – in the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha
This year, 2016, will be no different.
As Stamp News Now says, “The gold-colored calligraphy on the stamp was created by world-renowned calligrapher Mohamed Zakariya. It reads Eidukum mubarak, “May your Eid be bountiful (or blessed).” The calligraphy on previous Eid stamps issued by the USPS read Eid mubarak, “may the religious holiday be blessed.”
Now, lest you think there’s any sort of agenda in our government under Obama (of course not!) other stamps announced for 2016 celebrate pets, apples, pears, ice cream, black heritage and singer Sarah Vaughn. And yes, there are two for Christmas, one for Hanukkah…and of course one for Kwanzaa, that ancient holiday first celebrated in 1966.See, now you have something to look forward to – other than Election Day!
