Upon winning awards and championships, actors, singers musicians and athletes often thank God for their achievement. Tim Tebow’s drop to one knee for a moment of prayer on the football field has even managed to become part of the cultural landscape and spawn its own verb, “tebowing.”

Is God really that much of a sports or music fan? One Olympic medalist, a devout Christian, has her own strong opinion on the matter.

First-time Olympian Maya DiRado won two gold, one silver and a bronze medal in the Rio Olympics — and incredible achievement for a first appearance!

Yahoo Sports reports, The first generation Argentine American from Santa Rosa, California has already announced that these Olympics (her first) will also be her last. One month after competing in Rio, she’ll begin a new career as a business analyst for a management consulting firm in Atlanta, Georgia. The Stanford grad said knowing there’s an expiration date on her professional swimming career has helped her to stay motivated and excited.

But does DiRado credit God for her talent and achievement? Not exactly…

Western Journalism reports, “Knowing that I’m a child of God and that his love for me is determined by nothing I can achieve or do on my own has given me a quiet confidence. I think that my faith has helped me chart my own course and pursue my goals” she said in an interview with Christianity Today.

DiRado believes she knows the things the matter to God

I think God cares about my soul and whether I’m bringing his love and mercy into the world. Can I be a loving, supportive teammate, and can I bless others around me in the same way God has been so generous with me?” she said.

Victory in the pool is not important in God’s eyes, she said.

“My God is powerful and in control, but I don’t think he cares whether I win. It’s interesting theology you can get into when it’s a God of victory in your sport,” she said.

“I always attended church growing up but started questioning my beliefs as a teenager. They were supportive of this and, through some investigating and lots of reading and talking with mentors, I came to know and follow Christ and make my faith my own,” she said.

“It’s been a long journey since that time, but Jesus has been a constant as I grow and see him shaping me in new ways,” she told Christianity Today.

We congratulate Ms. DiRado and feel quite confident her achievements are only beginning. It would seem God does care very much indeed.
