Chiraq: Spike Lee tackles black-on-black violence in next film

We’ve discussed here the tragic epidemic of black-on-black violence in this nation, which is generally ignored by the Left, in favor of any story that makes the police look racist.

So it’s surprising and welcome that filmmaker Spike Lee is planning to take on the issue in his next film project — which is strangely causing consternation on the Left.

As CBS Chicago reports, “Lee plans to set his movie in Englewood, one of several violence-plagued neighborhoods that have earned the nickname “Chiraq.” Some feel that name—a blend of Chicago and war-torn Iraq—furthers negative perceptions about the city.”

“The label has been slapped on the city by rappers and spread through social media because of gun violence in some Chicago neighborhoods including Englewood, where Lee plans to set his movie.”

“Supporters have said Lee’s film could potentially expose real problems in some of Chicago’s most violent neighborhoods”.

“Lee said his film will hold a mirror up to reality, like the spate of violence on Wednesday, when more than a dozen people were shot, three of them fatally.”

Or like the few weeks before that with three dead and ten wounded. Or that incident last January with three dead and more than a dozen injured. Or that weekend last December with two dead and more than a dozen injured.

You see, some folks would rather not publicize that reality – you know, tell the truth.

Lee met with Mayor Rahm Emanuel who was not happy with the title “Chiraq” because he said there were very good people in Englewood who were raising their families.

Fourth Ward Alderman Will Burns has gone so far as to suggest withholding $3 million in tax credits for the film if the title isn’t changed, but Lee says “Chiraq” is not about the image of Chicago, but the reality of children dying.

However, despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the film is being described by Screen Daily as a “comedy musical” which will center on a woman’s quest to end gang warfare in Chicago.

The film will be a riff on Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata.” The ancient Greek comedy tells the story of a woman with an interesting plan to end the Peloponnesian War.

Lysistrata meets with the women of Sparta, Thebes and other areas and convinces them to swear an oath that they will withhold sex from their husbands until both sides sign a treaty of peace.

Let’s hope Lee’s film version has (ahem) a happy ending…
