Donald Trump essentially launched his entire presidential campaign on his strong comments about illegal immigrants, and bullish pro-business approach for strengthening our economy. He rocketed to the head of the GOP pack, and has maintained his lead.
Is Trump’s poll success in the U.S. a strange American quirk? Apparently not.
Voters in Switzerland (of all places) signaled their support for those very same principles in their election yesterday.
As the U.K. Telegraph reports,”The anti-immigration Swiss People’s Party (SVP) won the biggest share of the vote in Sunday’s national parliamentary election, keeping pressure on Bern to introduce quotas on people moving from the European Union.
Success for the SVP, coupled with gains made by the pro-business Liberal Party (FDP), led political commentators to talk of a “Rechtsrutsch” – a “slide to the right” – in Swiss politics.
And I think it’s safe to say the people of America are worried about mass migration as well.
Success for the SVP, coupled with gains made by the pro-business Liberal Party (FDP), led political commentators to talk of a “Rechtsrutsch” – a “slide to the right” – in Swiss politics.Immigration was the central topic for voters amid a rush of asylum seekers from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe. “The vote was clear,” SVP leader Toni Brunner told Swiss television. “The people are worried about mass migration to Europe.”
In addition, Switzerland’s voters signaled their fears about EU membership with slogans like “Stay free.”
Come to think of it, that might not be a bad slogan for the GOP side in 2016.
Are we witnessing a global shift to the right? Time will tell. But one thing is for certain. You can’t blame anything but leftist policies for the mess Europe and the EU finds itself in now.
