The State of California has been a Democrat stronghold for decades, granting the party up to 54-55 electoral votes in each of the past seven presidential elections. It’s for that reason the recent “Calexit” movement — in response to Donald Trump’s victory — makes little sense. With California excluded, Trump would’ve won the popular vote by 1.4 million.
There’s no way California will actually secede from the union (how much luck has Texas had, after all), but they are looking to differentiate themselves from the rest of the nation in another way. You’ve heard of sanctuary cities before, but California wants to take that to a whole new level.
As Townhall reported:
California is preparing to prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal laws regarding immigration, as sanctuary cities and democrat politicians throughout the country continue to defy President Donald Trump.
A special legislation is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday in the state senate.
The Senate Public Safety Committee drafted SB54 which includes a fast-tracked legislation that would spend unlimited state money to provide lawyers for people facing deportation. Many of California’s largest cities — such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento — already have sanctuary status. President Trump signed an executive order putting cities on notice their federal funding would be at stake if they were to keep a “sanctuary” status. Thus far, Miami has caved, while other mayors of sanctuary cities are banding together.
If California were to become a sanctuary state, would Trump then threaten the entire state’s federal funding? Given how good they are at wasting money, maybe we should HOPE they become a sanctuary state.[Note: This post was authored by Matt Palumbo. Follow him on Twitter @MattPalumbo12]
