On Easter Sunday, NBC sports announcer Craig Calcaterra tried to lampoon what he perceived to be hypocrisy on those who don’t want politics injected into sports. Did you, for instance, find Colin Kaepernick’s protest to be in bad taste? Well, according to Calcaterra’s “logic,” if you aren’t also offended by the sight of an American flag, you’re a hypocrite.
How is the American flag political? Who knows.
The tweet came after the Atlanta Braves unveiled the flag while the national anthem played. He later defended his position, claiming that the US government pays sports teams to promote patriotism (there actually is some truth to the claim – but patriotism at American sporting events predates the government shilling out a few million to sports teams from 2012-2015 by as long as there have been American sports). He also claimed that his tweet was an attempt to troll the “stick to sports” crowd of people who watch sports, and that flag waving is a political strategy.
The sane portion of twitter then proceeded to excoriate him.
The American flag is not a partisan political symbol, issue, or argument, nor do most Americans understand it as such. https://t.co/jO1gGvoJsa— Dan McLaughlin (@baseballcrank) April 16, 2017

@craigcalcaterra You're the politicizing it. Flag is bigger than party or any particular grievance. It is not saying we live in a utopia either.

Ironically, this drama all could’ve been avoided for Craig had he kept the politics out of sports.
