If you thought the women’s march was a singular event, they’re back in the news again for another event next month. Planned for March 8th the theme is “A Day Without Women” (make whatever jokes you wish in the comments).
The announcement begins: “In the spirit of women and their allies coming together for love and liberation, we offer a Day Without A Woman. We ask: do businesses support our communities, or do they drain our communities? Do they strive for gender equity or do they support the policies and leaders that perpetuate oppressions?” It’s still unclear what exactly the strike will entail and how it will be organized.
Apparently some other liberals caught wind of this, because in addition to the day without women, there’s now a “day without immigrants” going on today — supposedly.
According to Business Insider: Thousands of immigrants are expected to participate in the “Day Without Immigrants” strike on February 16 [today].The protest, in which participants will stay home from work and school, aims to show how crucial immigrants are to America’s economy and society as a whole. The strike is in defiance of President Trump’s immigration order, which would have temporarily barred immigrants and refugees from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the country. Though the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit struck down the executive order on February 5, the Washington Post reported a few days later that Trump is considering re-writing the plan.
Many are also citing last week’s nationwide sweep of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests, as well as Trump’s promise to build a wall along the US-Mexico border, as reasons for the strike.
Some businesses — including a few McDonald’s — are closing for the entire day, while others say they will give a portion of the day’s earnings to nonprofits that help Latino communities. They range from shops to restaurants to supermarkets to bars.
Protests are planned in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston, Houston, Chicago, and New York City, where dozens of retailers will close. More than 250 businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina will close too, Spanish-language newspapers Que Pasa Mi Gente and Hola Noticias reported. Celebrity chefs José Andrés and Andy Shallal, both immigrants themselves, have also announced they will not open their restaurants on Thursday.
Here are a few other businesses across the country that are shuttering, according to Twitter.
Tried to get a cup of coffee at McDonald's, closed. Went to next one, closed. I don't need coffee. #DayWithoutImmigrants 👊🏻

It’s unclear how many participants there will be in total, but it’ll likely be in the thousands. In addition to the aforementioned 250 in Charlotte
boycotting themselves participating, 50 are in D.C., and there are also reports that restaurants in Austin, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Philadelphia, Des Moines, New Jersey, North Carolina, Boston, Chicago, and New York will close or reduce service.
Regardless, in a nation of over 300 million people and tens of millions of businesses, this will hardly empty the streets.
It’s a bizarre theme for a protest, given that it’s illegal, not legal immigrants Trump is opposed do. Do these people think Trump is on the verge of deporting his own wife or something?
Perhaps a protest most of us would rather see is a day without ILLEGAL immigrants. That would mean the American taxpayer saving $310 million (the annual $113 billion cost divided by 365), and quite a few less crimes too. Despite representing only 3.5 percent of the population, illegal immigrants account for:
- >13.6 percent of all offenders sentenced for crimes committed in the U.S.
- >12 percent of murder sentences
- >20 percent of kidnapping sentences
- >16 percent of drug trafficking sentences
The New York Times said that today’s day without immigrants will “hurt the stomach,” but none of the restaurants in my hometown are closed today. I guess that means they’d rather uphold the stereotype that immigrants are hardworking than find a political excuse to play hooky.
