Liberals who blast FOX News as a right-wing echo chamber just haven’t been paying attention. Not only does the network routinely host and hire contributors all across the political spectrum, even the ideologues don’t always toe the party line.
Following the horrific massacre in Orlando, even Donald Trump had warmed up to some minor forms of gun control, and he wasn’t the only one. FOX host Gretchen Carlson came out for banning assault weapons.
HotAir quoted her as saying: “I think some of these mass shootings would have been less deadly today if that were the case, but I’m also with the majority today taking a stand,” she added, pointing to a recent Quinnipiac poll that showed 58 percent of Americans support banning the sale of assault weapons.
“Can’t we hold true the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?” she asked.
As a fan of Gretchen, I (Matt Palumbo) hope I can convince her otherwise. To lay out a few statistics:
- Handguns are used in the overwhelming majority of gun crimes. If the pro-gun control side was concerned about reducing gun violence, that’s what they’d attack. Instead, they’re going after guns that look scary. Why? Because while most support banning “scary” guns, almost no one supports banning handguns.
- Five to six times as many people are killed by knives than all rifles. The multiple would be even higher if we looked at only assault rifles.
According to a study commissioned at the University of Pennsylvania for the Justice Department, because the ban failed to reduce the frequency that large capacity magazines were used in crimes, “we cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence.”
When the government publishes a study showing that a gun control measure doesn’t work, I’ll take their word for it. Hell doesn’t freeze over very often.
