As most of Europe has welcomed in refugees with open arms and without question, they’re dealing with the consequences after the fact. While America supposedly has an extensive screening process for the 10,000 Syrian refugees we’ve allowed in, Europe has had the closest thing to a pure “open borders” policy as you can imagine.
For security purposes, a number of nations have either banned, or are trying to ban the burka, the full body cloak worn by some Muslim women. France has already had a burka ban in place before the refugee crisis (and Belgium followed in their footsteps), but tried (unsuccessfully) to also ban the “burkini” (full body cover swimwear) and Germany has become the latest to propose a burka ban. A handful of regions in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Russia already have bans in effect.
The justification for banning the burka is to improve security. The nation of Chad, for example, placed a burka ban in effect after two Boko Haram suicide bombers killed thirty in the nation’s capital, arguing that suicide bombers can easily hide explosives under loose clothing. Of course, it’s not just Islamists who can use the burka as a disguise – their enemies have appropriated the tactic, and now even ISIS is having to impose a ban at their security centers.
ISIS in Mosul, Iraq has reportedly banned the face-covering burqa veil in security and military centers due to safety concerns. While the burka is mandatory in other parts of the city, ISIS has prohibited the veils after a number of insurgents were killed by women wearing burqas to disguise themselves.
If I may interject to make a “dad joke:” I suppose the term “militant feminist” has a whole new meaning.According to a report by Al Alam News Network, as translated by IFP, within the past two years, the ISIS used to force women in Iraq and Syria to wear burqa and niqab; however, now the group has no choice but to prevent women with burqa from entering its security centres.
A local source in the Iraqi province of Nineveh announced on Friday, September 2, that the terrorist group has released an order, based on which no woman is allowed to be wearing niqab or burqa when entering the security and military centres. The two shooters haven’t been caught, and based on their appearance, I can’t imagine the description of the suspect narrows it down to anyone except all women in ISIS occupied territory.
