Tonight President Donald Trump will be giving a speech in the House chamber to a joint session of Congress.
As LTC West wrote about in his column earlier today:
“Multiple Democratic members of Congress have announced their intentions to bring illegal immigrants with them to President Donald Trump’s speech on Tuesday. The State of the Union-style speech from Trump will be his first joint congressional address, and follows a campaign during which he railed against undocumented immigrants [you mean, illegal aliens] from Mexico and his administration’s more recent moves to step up deportations.”
At least a half-dozen House and Senate Democrats are going to be bringing immigrants who came to the U.S. as children but are temporarily shielded from deportation due to the Obama-era program “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA).
Trump hasn’t yet eliminated — or threatened to eliminate — DACA, but has implemented policies that will overall result in significantly more deportations.
New York Democrat, Rep. Joseph Crowley, invited a Queens convenience store owner who was the victim of an anti-Muslim hate crime to the speech, and California Democrat, Judy Chu, is bringing an Iranian graduate student denied entry to the U.S. last month before Trump’s travel ban was blocked by the 9th Circuit.Trump will be bringing some guests of his own to his speech, and it’s a stark contrast to those his opponents are bringing. According to the New York Post:
Trump has invited the family members of those killed by illegal immigrants, and the widow of Justice Antonin Scalia to attend his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.Maureen McCarthy Scalia will attend the speech, along with Jessica Davis and Susan Oliver — both widows of California police officers killed by an illegal immigrant in 2014. Another victim of illegal immigrant crime Trump invited is Jamiel Shaw Sr., a father whose 17 year old son was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant in 2008. They’ll all be seated with Melania Trump during the speech tonight along with two other guests (Megan Crowley, a woman with a rare genetic disorder, and school choice advocate Denisha Merriweather).
As you’d expect, the president is expected to highlight his campaign to deport illegal immigrants who have committed crimes in the United States.
Using children as props hasn’t worked for Democrats on the issue of gun control, will it work when they try it on immigration? Unlikely.
