Yesterday, we reported on some rather strong comments from one of the sisters of Sylville Smith, the 23-year-old man whose death last Saturday has sparked riots in Milwaukee. She started out by stating “At the end of the day, acting out ain’t gonna solve it. Ain’t gonna solve nothing for Sylville. The city went crazy (Saturday) night over Syville. We tired of it. We tired. Burning down s**t ain’t gonna help nothin’!”
Correct…Except she didn’t stop there. “You’re burning down s**t we need in our community. Take that s**t to the suburbs! Burn that s**t down!”
Yes – don’t burn down our community, burn down another community that has absolutely no connection to this police shooting!
If you watched CNN, you would’ve seen that sister portrayed in a positive light, calling for peace. How, considering she encouraged rioters to burn down the neighboring suburbs? Why, by completely editing that comment out.
You wouldn’t guess Smith had said anything of the kind based on CNN’s reporting. Both on their website and televised on CNN Newsroom Monday, CNN described Sherelle Smith as “calling for peace.” They conveniently left out the rest of her message, calling for protesters to burn down the suburbs.Smith’s sister Sherelle Smith condemned the violence, saying the community needs the businesses affected. “Don’t bring that violence here,” Neal, his other sister, said while sobbing.
That was all CNN reported. Again on CNN Newsroom this morning, correspondent Ana Cabrera reported that Sherelle Smith was “calling for peace,” before playing just a few seconds of Smith’s words that left out the most damning part.
And of course, people noticed. When CNN reported Ana Cabera (in the video above) made a post about Milwaukee, users quickly pounced, questioning her selective editing.
