BREAKING: Bannon OUT

Steve Bannon just heard the words “you’re fired” – from his national security role, at least.

The Hill is reporting that President Trump has removed chief White House strategist Steve Bannon from his role on the National Security Council (NSC), according to a regulatory filing dated Tuesday.

Bannon in January was elevated to a position on the NSC principals committee, in a shakeup of the council. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and director of national intelligence had their roles downgraded in the move.

The Joint Chiefs chairman and intelligence director are having their roles on the principals committee restored, the filing said.

Bloomberg was first to break the story – describing the event as being part of a reorganization of the National Security Council in which Trump also downgraded the role of his Homeland Security Adviser, Tom Bossert. The change also adds Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, back to the committee.

White House correspondent Rosie Gray quoted a source as telling her that Bannon’s only purpose on the Council was to keep an eye on Mike Flynn, who was fired in February. She also noted that he never attended a single meeting.

According to NBC’s Peter Alexander, Bannon is still keeping his security clearance despite his removal.

Bannon was given a permanent seat at the White House’s NSC meetings in January.

Bannon is out from one job, but this likely won’t be the last we see of him in the Trump administration.
