Another day, another “micro-aggression” triggering lefty outrage.
This time the “tolerance” brigade is petitioning to have Betsy DeVos disinvited to deliver the commencement address at an historically black university (HBCU).
According to the Huffington Post:
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is set to deliver the commencement speech at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, the school announced on Monday.
…[I]n February, President Donald Trump met with more than 60 presidents of historically black colleges and universities. During the meeting, Trump signed an executive order to create a direct line for HBCUs to the president, but some in attendance believed it served as a photo-op and not a forum for HBCUs to discuss their grievances.
Twitter users criticized Bethune-Cookman for inviting DeVos to speak.
@bethunecookman You SHOULD be providing grads with speakers who encourage service to the community, not ones who don't know who you are or why you exist— Erin Corbett (@GrandmaCheesy77) May 2, 2017
Having Betsy Devos Speak at Commencement is a direct slap in the face to the legacy of Mary McLeod Bethune. #StopDevosBCU— T • W I L L (@TheReal_TWill) May 1, 2017
BCU graduate Dominik Whitehead started a Change.org petition on Monday to prevent DeVos from speaking at the May 10 ceremony:
Having DeVos speak at the commencement ceremony is an insult to the BCU graduating class, students, alumni, family, friends, and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s legacy. We, the proud alumni of Bethune-Cookman University, do not want Betsy DeVos to have a seat at our table. Please rescind her invitation to speak at the graduation ceremony.
We, the proud alumni of Bethune-Cookman University, understand the importance of engagement and open communication HBCUs must have with all levels of government; therefore instead of inviting Secretary DeVos to graduation, let’s welcome her to the table and have meaningful dialogue about stronger policies, the White House HBCU Initiative, and the importance and contributions of HBCUs.
The petition has nearly 4,500 signatures as of Tuesday morning, more than 500 short of its goal.”
As alluded to in the article, who could forget the social media meltdown around the HBCU presidents visiting the White House?
President Trump is actively engaging with the Black community. He’s been criticized for it (pandering), yet if he didn’t, he would surely be branded with a scarlet ‘R’ for “racist.”
Enter Betsy DeVos, a woman sharply criticized for her unique approach to our clearly broken educational system.
If the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, then what is throwing money at the same problem of our failing schools in our most troubled inner-cities suffering under Democrat rule decade after decade with no improvement? (Hint: madness).
If Barack Obama’s shuttering of the enormously successful DC Opportunity Scholarship (voucher) Program serving predominantly minority students wasn’t “racist,” then why is a white president trying to better the system for disadvantaged, minority…and, frankly, all students viewed with such suspicion and inherent racism?
Ms. DeVos has been jeered, threatened and blocked as she has tried to visit and connect with educational communities across the nation. She is absolutely living up the Trump pledge to engage with black community and creating better outcomes for minority students.
A point Buthune-Cookman President Jackson understands quite clearly, as the HuffPo piece demonstrates:
She [DeVos], too, represents someone in a position to have a positive impact on BCU students and thousands like them around the country,” he said. “I would like to reassure all of our supporters that we’re looking to build a bridge for a mutually beneficial relationship with Secretary DeVos.
HBCUs have praised the Trump effort, thus, it makes sense that Ms. DeVos would be invited to speak. If Hillary had won the election, would anyone have batted an eye at an HBCU commencement address invitation? If Hillary lost the election…because “sexism,” isn’t rescinding a DeVos invite…racist?
Rational people wouldn’t think so. But, clearly, we know those on the left are anything (everything!) but rational.
