A mother’s perspective: What NO ONE is saying about 12-year-old conservative activist

First and foremost I want to post a disclaimer: Children should be free to be anything they want and say whatever they want.

However, one must realize that the changes between the ages of 10 and 18 in ANY kid’s life are tremendous. That being said, I don’t think (remember this is MY opinion) ANY kid should be held up as an icon on any side of the political arena. This is especially true in our era of the extended childhood of angry 30-, 40- and 50-year-old “teenagers” who will get online, troll for victims and target these children with vile obscene messages and death threats.

Although these iconic precocious youngsters (the bloggers and You-tubers) are often well spoken and cute as a bug, they are real human beings who have no idea that the troll to their site might be simply a maladjusted person with serious issues of isolation, rejection and defeat. For example, there have been times that I have opened my blog to find pictures of fairly under-developed male genitalia, total “cuss-outs” and threats from people who have neither read nor digested the content but object to my opinion outright because someone else told them what I wrote or they just know it was “what I meant.” They have threatened to “shag” me and worse. (By the way, the shag is pretty scary since I actually DID have a shag haircut when I was a teenager and because I have “natural” hair, the thickness made me look like Lincoln, our neighbor’s standard poodle. Now that IS scary. But I digress…)

As Newsmax reports, C.J. Pearson, the 12-year-old black conservative who has been a vocal online critic of President Barack Obama is receiving support from his fans after leaving social media amid reported threats. The team that manages Pearson’s Facebook account posted screen grabs from Twitter of comments directed at Pearson on Thursday by a user with the handle @MonaB2010 (Mona Hussein Obama).

The vile “Mona” goes on to say: “If you’re not the an [sic] official GOP, then they need to denounce u. Otherwise we go for the lawsuit,” the person tweeted, followed by “pooh no sorry your fam has been bowing down to white ppl. So it’s the rest that need to be killed” and “Wish we could switch Trayvon’s life for yours.”

She/he ended with, “you don’t need to copy me to all your little racist noise machine feeds. I’ll see you in court. Will file Tuesday.”

Understandably, the exchange frightened C.J. Certain threats have a chilling effect on children. Death, lawsuits and the possibility of harm to their parents are probably three of the hottest buttons.

So what was the outcome? He has been silenced by old Mona, who is probably a lonely 45-year-old shut-in lurking in Momma’s basement until the night shift at the convenience store.

Instead of writing, speaking or daring to think differently, he has been silenced by the nefarious screed of a sick human.

C.J.’s sad reply: “After much thought and consideration, I’ve decided to take a break from politics and political commentary. I had a horribly rough night on Twitter after a woman not only threatened to sue me for expressing my opinions but threatened my family,” he said. “At this point, I’ve decided that it’s best for me to take a step back and evaluate all of my options before continuing down this path.”

A voice lost and silenced in this vague, anonymous cyber-attack age.

Pearson’s conversation with @MonaB2010 began after he criticized actor George Takei’s attack on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ same-sex marriage dissent. Takei called Thomas a “clown in blackface.”

What is the message here? It’s okay for George Takei or anyone to attack a conservative but, man-oh-man, if you are black and a conservative AND you are not on the Obama bandwagon, we can kill your future and your family. “You, my boy are not free.” The First Amendment is not a right for you. And had this been a conservative making these comments, the Justice Department would have been called in to find that person and arrest him or her for hate crimes, since the threats were made against a black kid.

For her part, @MonaB2010 claims on her Twitter profile that she has been attacked by “RWNJs” (Right-wing nut jobs) and that “Black Twitter” has supported her.

I bet.

But going back to the “precocious kid” idea and the need to be a bit cautious about putting children in this limelight. Let us remember Jonathan Krohn, the adorable cherub who headlined the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) convention of 2009, and wrote a book on conservatism which was released in 2010. He wooed the conservative crowd and had them, not to mention, a number of journalists at his feet. Several Facebook fan pages were started for him, including one called “Jonathan Krohn 2032,” a reference to the first year he will be eligible to run for president of the United States.

After the conference, Krohn’s parents received hate mail accusing them of brainwashing their son, but both insist Krohn developed his own political thinking.

Krohn attended the 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference, but did not have a speaking role. By 2012, he confirmed to Politico that he no longer considered himself a conservative, and in fact takes a liberal point of view on many issues, including same-sex marriage and the Affordable Care Act. He also said that if he were old enough to vote in the 2012 presidential election, he would have voted for Barack Obama.

In 2012, his interview with The Huffington Post indicated that he felt his NOW conservative critics (because of his shift) were “scorned right-wingers showing all the maturity of a little boy.” AND…”the right’s idea of political discourse is increasingly becoming a battle between “drunken college boys fighting over which one of their fraternities is cooler” who have the “maturity of schoolyard bullies.”

Finally, typical of a 17-year-old boy, he admitted that one of his goals was to date a woman with “cans the size of my head” –a little crude, but pretty age appropriate.

Politics and threats from stupid people can come later. We should ALL lay-off these kids. They are not small adults and they are DEFINITELY NOT a soothsayer or oracle of political thought.
