Whoa: Pope wades into transgender debate, NAILS IT…

Pope Francis has garnered some adoration from the Left for his more progressive stances. Francis has blasted income inequality; said even atheists can go to heaven; asked “who am I to judge?” regarding homosexuality; called pollution a sin and said we have a moral obligation “for a binding international agreement to combat global warming”; and opened up a temporary “mercy window” to make it easier for women who’ve had abortions to confess their sin and be welcomed back into the church.

Liberals seem to forget that the Pope is Catholic. Other progressive statements aside, the man is still opposed to gay marriage and abortion; he just doesn’t harbor any resentment against those who are gay and have abortions… much like most conservatives.

Here in America, we’ve been pushing aside major issues to argue over transgender bathrooms, of all things. Apparently, nobody’s realized the simplest solution would just be for businesses to have a third, “gender neutral” bathroom to accommodate their transgender customers. Well, now even Pope Francis is weighing in on the transgender debates, and given his rather progressive stances, his comments are rather stunning. The New York Times reports:

Pope Francis has lamented that children are being taught at school that gender can be a choice, adding that his predecessor, Benedict XVI has labeled current times “the epoch of sin against God the Creator.”

The pope said he wanted to conclude his remarks by reflecting on this: “We are living a moment of annihilation of man as image of God.”

Francis said: “Today, in schools they are teaching this to children — to children! — that everyone can choose their gender.”

Without specifying, he blamed this on textbooks supplied by “persons and institutions who donate money.” The pope blamed what he called “ideological colonizing” backed by “very influential countries” which he didn’t identify, adding “this is terrible.”

One such “colonization” he said — “I’ll say it clearly with its first and last name — is gender.”

“Speaking with Pope Benedict, who is well, and has a clear mind, he was telling me: ‘Holiness, this is the epoch of sin against God the Creator.’ He’s intelligent! God created man and woman, God created the world this way, this way, this way, and we are doing the opposite,” Francis told the Polish bishops Wednesday shortly after his arrival in Krakow at the start of a five-day pilgrimage.

Francis’ ended by telling the Polish bishops he wanted them to reflect on this: “We must think about what Pope Benedict said — ‘It’s the epoch of sin against God the Creator.'”

Francis, of course, is not encouraging intolerance against the transgender community. Back in January of 2015, he had a private meeting with Diego Neria Lejarraga, a transgender man. When he asked Francis if he had a place in the church, Francis reportedly responded by embracing him.

I (The Analytical Economist) am not a religious man — but Francis is not wrong. Reality is not optional. If I had a nickel for every gender that was real, I would have exactly ten cents.
