We’re running out of closet space to store all the red flags Omar Mateen gave us.
Celebrated the 9/11 attacks while in high school — check. Investigated twice by the FBI — check. Family sympathizes with the Taliban — check. Attended a radical mosque — check.
Unlike other homegrown terrorists, it’s impossible to pinpoint a moment in his life when he began to become radicalized. In fact, as HotAir is reporting, Mateen’s been fantasizing about a massacre since elementary school.
The warnings signs about Mateen began when was still in elementary school. CNN reports he once threatened to bring a gun to school and shoot everyone. He would have been 9 or 10 at the time (from the clip below):
CBS News reports his teachers began documenting his rude, aggressive behavior in 3rd grade:
A former classmate at Mariposa elementary school in Port St. Lucie, Florida tells CNN, Mateen once threatened to bring a gun to school and kill everyone. That was in fourth or fifth grade. He was nine or ten years old. The classmate could not recall what punishment Mateen received, but said it was “a very big deal at the time.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d_KEdirN1c
In 3rd grade at Mariposa Elementary School, a teacher writes that Mateen is verbally abusive, rude, aggressive, and “much talk about violence & sex (obscenities).” The teacher writes that Mateen’s hands are all over the place and, “on other children.”
A guidance counselor in 4th grade writes that Mateen lacks control, and says he is academically behind “at least two years.”
In Mateen’s 5th grade school record, a teacher at Mariposa Elementary School writes of Mateen’s inability to stay focused, his “lack of remorse,” and his opposition.
So how did we miss all those red flags, throughout all of those years? Did everyone put on the blinders of political correctness because they were afraid of being perceived as a bigot? We know of at least one instance where that was the exactly the case. If any one of those red flags reported had led to stopping Mateen, 49 people would still be alive and others would not lie fighting for their lives.
Perhaps it’s time for the Department of Homeland Security to amend its admonishment, “If you see something, say something — yes, even if they are Muslim.”
