We all know how the liberal media portrays conservatives: rich, greedy, and stingy.

In liberal land, conservatives are greedy for wanting to keep their own money while liberals are generous for wanting to take other people’s money and spend it. Weird how that works, isn’t it?

According to the new Almanac of American Philanthropy, America is the most generous country in the world when it comes to charitable contributions. And as for which party is more generous: liberals won’t be happy.

As reported by The Washington Examiner:

Americans are a charitable group, in fact the most generous in the world, according to the new Almanac of American Philanthropy.

In a first of its kind survey, the Almanac found that Americans out-donate Britain and Canada two-to-one and nations like Italy and Germany 20-to-one. What’s more, more than half of every single income class except those earning less than $25,000 donate to charity.

The much maligned top 1 percent in the U.S. economy fork over one-third of all donations made. Even in death.

“The wealthiest 1.4 percent of Americans are responsible for 86 percent of the charitable donations made at death,” said the survey conducted by Public Opinion research.

And for what you’ve been waiting for, here’s the chart on charitable donations by party affiliation:

What’s more, Republicans appear to give bigger gifts, but Democrats pour in the smaller donations in a big number. Said the survey analysis, “If, however, you zero in on giving that is heavier or lighter than the middle range you find that the parties differ a lot. Democrats and Independents both had many zero-to-very-light givers (less than $100 for the year), and modest numbers of heavier givers. Republicans, in comparison, had comparatively few skinflints, and numerous serious donors — 31 percent sharing at least $1,000 with charity, versus 17 percent among Democrats, and 20 percent among Independents.”

Among other factors, American values are to thank for our status as the most generous country. Citizens of nations with large welfare states and high taxes tend to give less to charity than those with less generous welfare states and (relatively) lower taxes.

While the perks of a European welfare system may sound temping to many (who doesn’t want free stuff?), charity is a drastically more efficient way of helping the poor.

Just like everything else, government is less efficient in the administration of charity. Private charities distribute three times more per dollar brought in to the poor than government aid due to differences in overhead expenses.

Charity will do much more to help the poor than government could ever hope to on their own. Maybe liberals should stop being so greedy and donate more.
