When I was in Washington D.C. last week on Capitol Hill, President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget was being delivered to Congressional offices. You want to talk about a waste of time and the killing of lots of trees? That budget is an example. But if there’s one thing a budget can highlight, it’s the ideological priorities of the author.
We know this Obama budget, the final one, only encompasses one fiscal quarter in his final year — can I get an AMEN from the choir — but it has deeper cuts to our defense. And that’s a reason why we want you to support our “Provide for the Common Defense Now!” petition at www.ncpa.org. However, there’s something else very telling about President Obama’s priorities, and it even has a leading Democrat Senator enraged.
As reported by the Bristol Herald Courier via the Associated Press, “Sen. Charles Schumer is slamming a White House proposal that would reduce funding for counterterrorism programs across the country by nearly $300 million.
The New York Democrat is pushing President Barack Obama to reconsider the cuts. Schumer notes that the cuts to the Urban Area Security Initiative were included in the proposed 2017 budget released last week by the White House. The initiative helps fund programs in cities across the U.S. to prevent extremist attacks, or respond to and recover from them. The proposed budget would cut the funding from $600 million to $330 million.
“These proposed cuts are ill-advised and ill-timed and they must be reversed. End of story,” Schumer said in a statement to The Associated Press. “In light of recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, and the vow by our extremist enemies to launch more attacks on our shores, it makes no sense to propose cuts to vital terror-prevention programs like UASI.”Schumer, who is expected to hold a news conference Sunday to decry the cuts, said the program is necessary to adequately fund counterterrorism programs in high-density urban areas like New York City. “New York City remains terror target number one and the NYPD relies on these programs to keep us safe,” he said.”
Apparently Sen. Schumer is now playing the role of Faust who also made a deal with the devil and got scorched. Just watch, all the inane liberal progressive media outlets will cry “Allen West called President Obama the devil in one of his posts.” Oh please. Guess I shouldn’t use “when you sleep with dogs you wake up with fleas” either…
Anyway, here’s Sen. Schumer who will have to explain to his largest constituency, New York City, why they will see a reduction in UASI funding. When I was a Member of Congress, I fought for Ft. Lauderdale to have a share of UASI funding, based on the one of the world’s largest cruise ports being there. And if you’ve been to Ft. Lauderdale, you know in one relatively small area you have an Islamic terrorist’s dream targets: a cruise port, an airport, and a petroleum storage facility.
You just have to ask, what does the mayor of New York City have to say about this cut to funding? You know, the other avowed socialist in the Democrat Party — lots of them these days — Bill de Blasio. We know violent crimes have been on the rise since the reign of de Blasio and now, after he cancelled the mosque surveillance program, Obama is cutting back UASI funding. Well, this is probably a result of Obama’s speech at the Islamic Center of Baltimore a few weeks back. Having this type of funding would promote “Islamophobia” maybe and that’s why CAIR lobbied Obama to end this funding.
I want you to think about how insidious this funding cut truly is. We’ve reported here about the five young men in Minnesota awaiting trial for seeking to join ISIS. FBI Director Comey has admitted they’re investigating Islamic terror activities in every state in the union. Why, after the San Bernardino attacks, and knowing ISIS has pledged to launch more attacks, would we cut this funding? And don’t forget we just had an Islamist attack in Columbus, Ohio by an individual who was on the watch list. He wielded a machete against patrons in a restaurant called Nazareth. And has anyone heard anything regarding the fella who shot the Philadelphia police officer point blank and admitted he supported ISIS? Last time I checked, Philly was a major urban area…
I can surely surmise Obama wants to increase domestic spending on government subsistence programs. Gotta keep folks dependent — but not exactly guarantee their security. These budgets are indeed a real waste of time. They are mandated by law, and end up going nowhere. But one thing is for certain: it does allow you to know what a person, in this case President Obama, deems vital and important.
And based on the nearly 50 percent cut to the UASI program, Obama doesn’t believe we have a problem in this country with Islamic terror. Kinda like he declared combat operations over in Iraq and Afghanistan – but didn’t he just deploy a battalion of 500 Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division to Helmand Province? Obama wants to restrict the types of equipment our law enforcement agencies have, and now he wants to cut funding for a program specifically aimed at deterrence of terrorist attacks. Who deploys into our urban areas?
But a more important question is, on whose side is President Barack Hussein Obama?
