You just knew it was coming sooner or later. Here we are failing at negotiations with the number one state sponsor of Islamic terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Iran. You’d think, knowing all the threats levied by Iran and its horrible human rights record against its own people, the United Nations would support a resolution and put more pressure against Iran, right?
Nah, as expected, the UN did exactly what they’ve always done and condemn the one being threatened and attacked — Israel. You all remember the UN representative who condemned Israel for not sharing the Iron Dome technology with Hamas?
As reported by the Associated Press, “The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved an Arab-backed resolution Tuesday calling on Israel to renounce possession of nuclear weapons and put its nuclear facilities under international oversight. The resolution, adopted in a 161-5 vote, noted that Israel is the only Middle Eastern country that is not party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It called on Israel to “accede to that treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons, to renounce possession of nuclear weapons” and put its nuclear facilities under the safeguard of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency.”
“The United States, Canada, Palau and Micronesia (thanks, islands) joined Israel in opposing the measure, while 18 countries abstained. Israel is widely considered to possess nuclear arms but declines to confirm it. The resolution, introduced by Egypt, echoed a similar Arab-backed effort that failed to gain approval in September at the Vienna-based IAEA. At the time, Israel criticized Arab countries for undermining dialogue by repeatedly singling out the Jewish state in international arenas. Israel’s U.N. Mission did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday. The U.N. resolution, titled “The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East,” pushed for the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East and lamented that U.S.-backed efforts to convene talks were abandoned in 2012.”
I must admit, there is a simple reason why Israel is not party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Because Israel is under constant attack and actually exists in an almost permanent state of war — certainly combat. If the Arab nations were serious they would stand up against Iran. If the Arab nations were serious they would be beating down Islamic terrorism and jihadism as demonstrated by groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, al-Qaida, ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and Al Aqsa Martyrs, amongst many others. Israel should not be expected to submit to any UN resolution especially when we know it was the UN that did nothing when it was uncovered — during the last conflagration with Hamas — that weapons were found in UN facilities in Gaza. And who can forget UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon being transported about the Middle East on Qatari Airlines while condemning Israel over its actions in Gaza against Hamas — yes, the same Qatar that is home to the leader of Hamas. Folks, you cannot make this stuff up. The best answer to the UN and its incessant denigration of Israel came just a few days ago from Israeli Ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor, which you can read here. It’s well worth it.
AP reports, “Israel has long argued that a full Palestinian-Israeli peace plan must precede any creation of a Mideast zone free of weapons of mass destruction. The country also argues that Iran’s alleged work on nuclear arms is the real regional threat. Iran denies pursuing such weapons. General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but carry moral weight because it is the only body where all 193 U.N. member states are represented.”
Moral weight? Where was the condemnation of all the uncovered secret tunnels constructed by Hamas into Israel — for one sole purpose? Nope, Hamas will be receiving more financial aid, to do what? And to believe that if Israel lets the UN monitor its nuclear deterrent threat all will be hunky dory – you cannot be serious, unless seriously delusional.
As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu so simply stated, “If Palestinians were to lay down their guns tomorrow, there would be no war. If Israel were to lay down its arms, there would be no Israel.”
Consider that statement and ask yourself, in every turn when Israel adopted a policy of acquiescing and ceding territory in exchange for “peace” what did they get in return? Even those very nice greenhouses that were left in Gaza — well, I think you get the point.
Sound policy is based on facts – and some assumptions — in order to develop courses of action and a final direction. The facts are simple: Israel is surrounded by those who wish its demise, and their actions confirm that assessment.
And the UN doesn’t side with Israel but rather the influences of despots, dictators, theocrats, and autocrats — it is becoming a failed organization. If I live in a bad neighborhood, I’m not going to tell anyone what I have to protect and defend myself — the mystery itself is a deterrent.
Some may consider that to be unfair — well, as US Marine Corps 1SGT (retired) Jim Reifinger states, “if you ever find yourself in a fair fight, its because your tactics suck.” I like that policy.
