Americans are certainly being hurt by the Obama economy but one industry continues to boom. According to David Sherfinski at the Washington Times:
Gun records checks, fueled by a post-Newtown boom of gun sales, hit a new high in 2013, and industry analysts expect ammunition to be the big seller this year as consumers catch up to all of those firearms purchases. More than 21 million applications were run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System last year, marking nearly an 8 percent increase and the 11th straight year that the number has risen.
In an interesting coincidence, this report came out as a federal judge was ruling against Chicago’s ordinance banning the sale of firearms within city limits. According to the Chicago Tribune, U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang said:
“Chicago’s ordinance goes too far in outright banning legal buyers and legal dealers from engaging in lawful acquisitions and lawful sales of firearms, and at the same time the evidence does not support that the complete ban sufficiently furthers the purposes the ordinance tries to serve.”
Perhaps Chicago-style politics were at play? BizPac Review says:
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wrote letters to Bank of America and TD Bank a year ago, asking them to cut off any business dealings with gun manufacturers. He hoped to force the weapons companies into supporting restrictive gun control measures. At the time, Smith & Wesson had a $60 million line of credit with TD Bank, and Sturm, Ruger & Co. had a $25 million line of credit with Bank of America.
Chicago is known for having the highest murder rate in the country despite, or because of, its strict gun control laws. Without a doubt, a principle goal of the progressive socialists is the disarming of the American people. There will also be no doubt that the decision by Judge Chang in the city of Obama will draw the ire of the presidet and his liberal progressive disciples. One can certainly expect a challenge to Judge Chang’s ruling. With the setbacks the Left continues to experience when confronting gun rights, such as the successful recall election of liberal Democrat Senators in Colorado, expect a renewed effort from liberals.
The economy may be struggling in some areas but,
“2013 was the best year for firearm sales (commercial, domestic) in history — period! That’s true for NH to Hawaii,” said Richard Feldman, president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association in Rindge, N.H. “Ruger alone sold well over one million guns this year.”
Feldman expects the next surge to be in bullets, saying “Ammunition will still be very strong in 2014 as it hasn’t caught up nationally with the demand.”
As we’ve reported previously, EPA regulations on primary lead smelters will ultimately put pressure on lead supplies and therefore ammunition production. As primary lead production closes down (a loss of some 130,000 tons), secondary means become primary. If supply can’t keep up with demand, we’ll have a deficit — and what good is a firearm without ammunition?
There is still the issue of background checks, but a measure proposed by Senators Toomey (R-Pa) and Manchin (D-WVa) was defeated last year. However, the Obama administration is still taking steps to encourage states to post more data about mentally ill residents to the national system. Two not-so -trustworthy departments, Justice and Health and Human Services are working to clarify who is prohibited from gun ownership because of mental health issues and a regulation to help states submit more information on people for the national background check system.
Of course my concern – which might be yours too – is will the DOJ and HHS try to define who is and who is not mentally capable of purchasing a firearm? I recall the DHS under Janet Napolitano proposed putting recent combat veterans on some sort of national watch list.
The fight for the Second Amendment is not over and will not be until we rid the federal government control by progressive socialists. Two quotes to remember:
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” (Thomas Jefferson)
“An armed man is a citizen. A disarmed man is a subject.” (Yours Truly)
