Further info for all you progressive socialists, so help me God

Given the hundreds of comments generated, progressive socialists appear to be all up in arms about the story we posted Saturday on the U.S. Air Force reversing itself on the phrase “So help me God” at the end of its enlistment/reenlistment oath. Just as a reminder, that is part of U.S. statute. And furthermore, here is the background on the Oath of Office for Members of the U.S. Congress, House of Representatives and Senate.

The Constitution (Article VI, clause 3) requires that Senators and Representatives take an oath of office to support the Constitution. The specific language of the oath has changed several times since it was first administered in 1789. It is set by statute (5 U.S.C. 3331), enacted by Congress. It now reads:

“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”

As for the Presidential oath, Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution requires that before presidents can assume their duties, they must take the oath of office. The completion of this thirty-five-word oath ends one president’s term and begins the next. From the day George Washington placed his hand on the Bible it has been the ongoing tradition — that is the Judeo-Christian Bible. The Presidential oath reads:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

So you can save the personal attacks, as I well understand the U.S. Constitution and law — while some of apparently do not. And nowhere in this oath or these traditions do I see anyone being asked to support a state-sponsored religion.

Just as a reminder for the historically-challenged, America was established upon a Judeo-Christian faith heritage, not a manmade doctrine of religion, and we don’t have a head of state who is also a head of church.

I will not succumb to the “fundamental transformation” of America, you chuckleheads.

Molon Labe!
