It was a busy first day at the 146th NRA Annual meeting and convention. Yesterday started for me with a nice run through downtown Atlanta over to the state capitol and back over to the new Mercedes Benz Stadium which is right next door to the Georgia Dome. It’s great to see so many gathering here in my hometown of Atlanta to celebrate the original American civil right. I was so honored to have the opportunity, the privilege, to address the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum.
And I wanted to take the time to talk about the fundamental right that established this great nation, and the people who stand against it.
Back on 19 April 1775, 242 years ago, a few brave men took to the field at Lexington Green. They stood and met an advancing British column. They did not retreat, but had answered the call to arms and in so doing, fired the shot heard around the world. It was a shot to signify our desire to be free, independent, and to establish a Republic that was void of tyranny. That day they sent a message to the entire world that we would be a land of the free, because we were the home of the brave.
But rarely do we teach our subsequent generations history, and as George Santayana said, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
And so it is because we don’t tell the story of WHY that column of British soldiers were there on that infamous day in Lexington, Massachusetts. Lexington was not their mission, not their objective. They were heading to Concord, Massachusetts for one single reason: to destroy the armament factory. British intelligence indicated the muskets and ammunition supplying the “rebels” was coming from that town, and it was to be destroyed. It never happened because the British were turned back at Concord Bridge — and what an experience it was for me to have visited those places and stand on Lexington Green and Concord Bridge. This nation fired its first shot for independence because we sought to protect our right to keep and bear arms. We fired that shot because we knew armed people are citizens, and unarmed people are subjects.
And now, 242 years later, imagine the restrictive gun laws facing the people of the state of Massachusetts. Our Founding Fathers knew our First Amendment rights could not be secured without the Second Amendment — but how odd that today we find these progressive socialists seeking to deny that very right which enabled us to come into existence.Instead, these liberal progressives come up with manmade rights that seek to enslave us to government, since they are granted by man. The left tells us that women have the right to kill our unborn children. They say we have a right to healthcare, home ownership, free college, and that marriage is a right, and that same-sex marriage is the law of the law…as declared by five black-robed, unelected jurists. But what I find so perplexing and hypocritical, is that these leftists seek to deny the one right that comes from that pivotal day which set in motion what would become the greatest nation the world would ever know, these United States of America.
If same sex couples are protected by the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause, why aren’t law abiding legal gun owners? Who are these people that have some absurd and perverted concept that we don’t have the right to keep and bear arms and that it shall not be infringed? Well, they are the same folks who believe all is well in Venezuela when Hugo Chavez disarmed the people there, and now Nicolas Maduro is arming outlaw gangs to gun down unarmed, subjects like sheep. The mantra of progressive socialism has always been for dictators, despots, and autocrats to rule over the people, once they have no means of standing against their tyranny.
And if anyone doesn’t believe this isn’t the dream of the liberal progressive left in America, you are delusional. Look at the anarchists who are terrorizing Americans and preventing them from speaking freely…such as at Berkeley. The fact that we live in an America where a speaker must be told your safety is not guaranteed is abhorrent. Then again, it is occurring in the state of California which has in essence disarmed the people. You cannot even have a concealed carry license there…but somehow Tashfeen Malik and Syed Farouk were able to get guns and gun down innocent people at a Christmas celebration in San Bernardino.
We have these arrogant liberal progressives who say they will shield criminal illegal immigrants, such as violent gangs like MS-13, while telling Americans they have no right to arm themselves. And are we to just sit and take this? We have Americans who live in their neighborhoods in fear of criminal gangs, restricted from having the ability to defend their first unalienable right, life.
No more. This must end. The Second Amendment is OUR right, and it’s time we just have civil disobedience and send a message to the left. We do not want your man made-up rights. We want those first ten amendments to the Constitution known as our Bill of Rights, of which the second gives us the right to keep and bear arms, and you, the left, have no freaking right to infringe upon it.
Ask yourself, why do we need a law from the Congress to say what is stated in our Constitution, unless the Constitution is meaningless? No more liberal progressive elites who live behind walls and have armed guards telling us we cannot protect ourselves. No more waiting for politicians to “grant” us what already exists, that which was established by those Minutemen on the field of Lexington Green. On April 19, 1775 we told the world that being an American means being armed, which means being a citizen. Today’s Redcoats need to know that spirit still remains inside of every red-blooded, liberty-minded American.
And that is what the National Rifle Association of America shall defend, because we are “freedom’s safest place.”
