I see something VERY disturbing happening today…

I’ve noticed something as it relates to today and that which it represents. We’ve seen our move away from Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays, and even Happy Winter Solstice. We’ve become so damaged by the talons of political correctness that it now threatens the very existence of our Republic. And I mean its very founding.

I’ve been amazed at how people greet you with “Happy 4th of July”, as if we are celebrating a numbered date on the calendar. If this continues, there will be generations who will no longer know what happened on this day, other than we should have cookouts and shoot off fireworks.

Today is our 240th American Independence Day, a significant day not just for America, but for the world.

It was on this day that the true codification of natural rights theory occurred. We declared in our statement of Independence that the unalienable rights of the individual come not from a monarch, a man, but from the Creator. Thomas Jefferson, having read the writings of the impeccable classical liberal theorist John Locke, who developed the premise of individual rights — life, liberty, and property — revised those principles for our new nation: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Jefferson articulated that governments are “instituted among Men, deriving this just Powers from the Consent of the Governed”. He went onto make it very clear that, “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles.”

What concerns me is that if we continue on the path of not teaching history — and I don’t consent to the revisionist version — nor civics, what lies ahead for this day when we celebrate our American Independence?

Ask yourself, when was the last time you read the entire Declaration of Independence to your family or friends? Heck, when was the last time you read it at all? I remember reading the entire Declaration of Independence at a ceremony in Delray Beach, Florida — it was hot, but then again, it was hot in Philadelphia 1776.

You see, if we read the entire Declaration of Independence, we’d see this was a list of grievances spoken against King George III, a justification document. Hence why James Madison, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton ensured one of our individual First Amendment rights was to “petition the government for redress of grievances.”

If you study our founding documents, you’ll come to learn there’s an intricate and supporting relationship between the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution — but that has to be taught.

You can do as I did as well, and read the phenomenal book by Hillsdale College President, Dr. Larry Arnn, entitled, The Founders’ Key: The Divine and Natural Connection Between the Declaration and the Constitution and What We Risk by Losing It.

What do we risk by not understanding our founding documents, namely the Declaration of Independence…comprehending why America was begun? America isn’t just terrain with borders, it’s an ideal, a dream that was brought to fruition. But if we’re not careful, this day will just become one of fireworks and furniture sales.

John Adams did indeed state, “I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival,” he wrote his wife, Abigail. “It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other…”

And yes, Adams did want us to celebrate July 2nd…but the date does not matter. It is these founding principles that would establish a Constitutional Republic and a representative democracy.

Oh yeah, as side trivia, “On July 4, 1826, at the age of 90, Adams lay on his deathbed while the country celebrated Independence Day. His last words were Thomas Jefferson still survives. He was mistaken: Jefferson had died five hours earlier at Monticello at the age of 82.”

How incredible that these two men, one from Massachusetts, the other Virginia, came together from two differing perspectives to give us this great nation — and passed within hours of each other on our fiftieth Independence Day.

These are the stories we must teach our children and grandchildren, lest they go off following the failed messages of the progressive socialist left. This is why we must not celebrate the 4th of July, but American Independence Day — or else someone will tell you they’re going to “fundamentally transform” your nation…and you have no clue what that means.

This is why today, I implore y’all to take the time to carefully read the entire Declaration of Independence and notice the parallels to the grievances then to today, such as, “He has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their Substance” – think IRS and other regulatory agencies.

Or how about this one, “He has combined with others to subject us to a Jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended legislation” – sound familiar? Consider Obama’s rule by edict and executive order antithetical to our Constitution.

And I love this one: “For imposing taxes on us without our Consent” – need I remind you there are twenty new taxes in Obamacare.

On this day in Philadelphia, 56 men gathered not just for fireworks and sales — but to “solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of right to be Free and Independent States…And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

On June 14th 1775 our Continental Army was formed, the motto of today’s U.S. Army is “This We’ll Defend.” Let us all defend these free and independent states from a new tyranny and make a stand for Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…not charlatans who believe they can promise our individual happiness.
