Here’s what I find MOST disgusting and offensive about the Mizzou situation

Yesterday was Veterans Day and we all focused on the service and sacrifice of those men and women who answered the call to stand guard on freedom’s rampart. I had the distinct pleasure of being a part of the Dallas Daughters of World War II luncheon on Veterans Day, moderating a conversation with Susan Eisenhower. As a former U.S. Army Paratrooper, I have to say one of the great feats of World War II was Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in military history. The mission was for airborne forces to jump ahead and secure a series of bridges along the singular road necessary for British armored formations to attack. The operation had great success save one thing — it went “a bridge too far.”

And so as I look at the situation at the University of Missouri I am reminded of that maxim, “never go a bridge too far.”

As reported yesterday at, there was “More awful news out of Missouri. KRCG 13 reporter Ashley Zavala reports that ROTC students have been told not to wear their uniforms to class today because of unspecified threats made to “Veterans and Soldiers” in the Columbia, Mo. area.”

Now, I taught ROTC at Kansas State University. It was at the time of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” debate and we had students “protesting” in front of our ROTC building and writing messages in chalk on the sidewalk. The last thing we were going to do is tell our Cadets to stop wearing their uniforms. We in the cadre made it clear in no uncertain terms that our program and cadets were not to be intimidated or threatened. And that is my problem about the whole University of Missouri episode.

Who’s in charge?

It now appears the student body president is embroiled in a bit of controversy, as the Blaze reports, “University of Missouri Student Body President Payton Head issued a chilling warning of a “confirmed” Ku Klux Klan presence on campus Tuesday — only to admit it was not true hours later.

He quickly sparked panic with a Facebook post claiming he was actively working with “the MUPD, the state trooper and the National Guard” on the so-called threat.”

And it also appears the poop swastika may have been a hoax – a complete load of crap — as reported by The Federalist: “Something stinks at the University of Missouri. A reported incident of vandalism at Mizzou sparked university-wide protests, a boycott by the school’s 4-5 football team, and eventually the resignation of the university president and chancellor. There’s only one problem: no evidence of the alleged incident, in which a poop swastika on the wall of a dormitory room was reported, has ever been made publicly available.

Did this incident occur as reported, or was it an immaculate defecation that formed the foundation of an unimaginable deception? According to Billy Donley the president of Mizzou’s Residence Halls Association (RHA), the poop swastika was reported at approximately 2:00 a.m. on October 24, 2015. Later in his letter, Donley noted that he only found out about the alleged vandalism incident “via a flyer posted on the walls” of the dorm. Calls to the University of Missouri Police Department, which responded to and investigated the alleged poop swastika incident, also failed to yield any evidence of the poopstika.

Multiple activists on Twitter pointed to this photo as proof that the incident occurred as reported, but a Google search for the same image shows that it has been floating around the Internet for nearly a year. A reddit thread from November of 2014 appears to contain the earliest publication of the photo in question, meaning that it most certainly does not constitute proof of the incident alleged to have occurred at Mizzou on October 24, 2015.”

What the heck is happening on this campus? We know about the mass communications instructor who demanded “muscle” to have a campus reporter removed. And to have University leadership just resign — what message does that send? Sure seems there’s a bunch of misguided emotions, and since when do students demand resignations over their feelings?

The leadership of the University of Missouri should have taken valid complaints, investigated, confirmed, validated, and then come up with solutions. Silly me, I thought that’s what rational people would do. Instead the mob has taken over at this campus. And to those football players who wanted to “boycott” practice and games, well, simple, you lose your scholarship — now go to class, and tell your parents they’ll be paying tuition. And for the Mizzou football coach to side with the players, well, that tells you where his concerns lie — football games, not developing and educating future adults.

But to have an email go out telling ROTC students not to wear their uniforms on campus on Veterans Day, the day after the 240th Marine Corps birthday is offensive and disgusting.

These are the young men and women who will take it upon their shoulders to “support and defend the Constitution” which means the rights and freedoms of every American citizen. And they’re supposed to hide their noble pursuit to serve this nation and embody the highest degrees of honor, integrity, and character? If anyone has the right to be on the University of Missouri, it is the Army ROTC cadets.

You see, the Morrill Act of 1862 designated land grants to states for developing institutions of learning – i.e. universities. Part of the Morrill Act was the establishment of Reserve Officer Training Corps units — previously only West Point produced Army officers. And the University of Missouri became a Land Grant in 1870.

Do I celebrate the First Amendment right to freedom of expression and assembly, right of free speech? Yep. But what I see developing and occurring at the University of Missouri is the perceived right to threaten, intimidate, and rant about having your way. And what is worse, there’s a lack of adult intestinal fortitude to stand against the insidious behavior. Somebody yelled “squirrel” on the campus of Missouri and folks went berserk and lost their God-given minds.

Just remember, the whacky college kids who railed against the man in the 60s are now running California — now ain’t that a daisy.
