Friday stress relief: sports round-up

It’s Friday and therefore time to think about weekend sports.

But first, congratulations to the Boston Red Sox and their first World Series victory in Fenway Park in some 90 years. The city and citizens of Boston deserved that championship after the horror they went through earlier this year. You are indeed “B Strong” and America learned a lot from you about resolve, resiliency, and courage.

Hard to believe we are halfway through the NFL season and two-thirds through college football season and the NBA and NHL have opened their seasons…talk about sports overload! But of course for me, the focus is on football.

Ok, I’ll say it, “Roll Tide!” You in the Bama nation certainly proved you are the #1 team in college football. I knew that game was not going to go well midway through the first quarter. And now my Tennessee Volunteers have to go to Columbia, Mo, to face the Missouri Tigers who are seething after their overtime loss to South Carolina last week.

I don’t know about many of you out there, but I’m absolutely surprised at the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. Having been stationed in Kansas for some 8 years — in fact, both of our daughters were born there – I know the fans in Kansas City are rabid lovers of football. I remember as a young fella even liking the ol’ KC Chiefs coached by Hank Stram and led by iconic names such as Len Dawson, Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, and who can ever forget the great Derrick Thomas who left us far too soon. This week the Chiefs travel to Buffalo to face the Bills. Is there an upset in the cards? Let us know what you’re thinking.

This Saturday, all eyes will be on the State of Florida. It’s the first time in ten years that the University of Miami and Florida State University are meeting as unbeaten teams. The game will be at Doak Campbell Stadium and quite sure it will be a raucous capacity crowd. Miami has struggled these past few games against North Carolina and Wake Forest. Florida State has been dominating, and I can’t forget the woodshed treatment dished out on Clemson, at Clemson, that made me a believer. I live down here in South Florida, but gotta go with the Seminoles on this one.

There are several other interesting games this week in college football: Oklahoma State goes to Lubbock to face Texas Tech; Michigan goes to East Lansing to take on the Spartans of Michigan State; and the world’s largest cocktail party takes place in Jacksonville with Georgia vs Florida. If not for so many horrendous injuries for both teams, perhaps the Georgia v Florida game would be more impactful.

What are the big college football games garnering your attention?

Enjoy the weekend, because in these times in America, we need a little stress reduction.
