A fellow Redleg artilleryman with whom I served in 4th Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment in the 1st Infantry Division, Alan Rohlfing, sent me this picture as a reminder.
It was from the Desert of Iraq after major combat operations had ceased, Easter sunrise service. Our Battalion Commander, COL John R. Gingrich, a strong and devout Christian man, brought us together at the Battalion Command Post and had the three tubes of our M109A5 howitzers raised to high angle.
Of course today, with people like Mikey Weinstein and his oxymoronic Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and with the complicit support of the Obama administration, we would be severely reprimanded for such an action.
The 5th Field Artillery Regiment motto is “Faithful and True”. It is the Artillery Regiment of one Alexander Hamilton and today Alpha Battery 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment carries the distinction of “Hamilton’s Own.” It is also the artillery unit, Battery D, 5th US Artillery under the command of LT Charles Hazlett, that supported the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg day two on Little Round Top. That Regimental motto is steeped in history and, if you ponder, certainly describes our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for our salvation and spiritual victory through redemption.
I remember tears in my eyes on that morning long ago in the desert in 1991. And Alan, thanks for bringing those tears back to me this morning.
Faithful and True
