Desperation? Obama sends letter to Iran for help against ISIS

We’ve voiced our concern here on countless occasions that the Obama administration would end up seeking coordination and communication with Iran to contend with ISIS. And apparently that’s been secretly going on – so much for the policy of transparency.

As reported by CNN, “President Barack Obama’s administration is trying to open channels of communication with Iran regarding the war on ISIS. Amid revelations that Obama sent a letter to Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last month pointing out the countries’ shared interest in beating ISIS, a senior U.S. official and a Western diplomat tell CNN that Washington has gone through the Iraqis to communicate with Iran. The conversations do not include taking joint military action against ISIS targets, the sources said, but are seen as necessary to avert conflict in U.S. and Iranian operations.”

I know many may say, look, we allied ourselves with Stalin against Germany during World War II. However, prior to that alliance, Russia had never supported combat operations against the United States and inflicted casualties — such as Iran has done since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Those of us who’ve been on the current battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan know Iran has been behind the scenes supporting Islamic terrorist activity. And unless you’ve been sleeping for the past 30 years or so, you’re aware Iran is the number one state sponsor of terrorism.

Iran still holds an American pastor, Saeed Abedini as a prisoner and fully supports Hamas and Hezbollah — sworn enemies of our best ally in the Middle East, Israel. I wonder what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thinks about this correspondence? It’s bad enough foreign policy that the Obama administration has close relationships with Qatar and Turkey — the two major supporters of Sunni Islamic terrorists.

Senior White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer wouldn’t address specific outreach efforts in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, but said: “We work very closely with the Iraqis and the Iraqis have a relationship with the Iranians.”

That’s carefully chosen political speak which in plain talk means “we’ve been talking with Iran but just want you to believe we’re going through an intermediary.” We all know Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces are in Iraq supporting Shiite militias. As we have outlined here, the major issue is what price the US will concede to Iran for their “handling” of the ISIS problem — we know it will be the relaxing of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

And of course in the theater of the absurd and game of musical chairs, which has come to be Washington DC — the military ends up being the one left standing. CNN reports “the discussions through the Iraqis are informal and conducted on a case-by-case basis via the Iraqi military, the sources said. The channels have become necessary, the U.S. military official said, because the United States and Iran are now operating in the same spaces. As a result, “accommodations must be made indirectly,” this official said. This includes airspace management, so U.S. and Iranian forces do not conflict while carrying out military operations in the same airspace, CNN was told. “With respect to Iran, we’re not coordinating with Iran, as you know,” said Gen. Lloyd Austin, the head of U.S. Central Command, at an event moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday, when asked how the United States prevents any accidental killing of Iranians who are on the ground advising Iraqi forces.”

Funny, it was General Austin who was then-operational theater commander on the ground in Iraq who recommended a residual force of some 15,000 — and was rejected by President Obama.

According to CNN, “the White House also stressed it is not working alongside the Iranian military. “The United States will not cooperate militarily with Iran in that effort. We won’t share intelligence with them,” White House spokesman Josh “Not So” Earnest said Thursday when asked about another communication between President Obama and Iran’s Supreme Leader.” We reported here that the Obama administration was sharing intelligence with Iran’s proxy Hezbollah — sorry, but I have to give you the truth.

This is the result of politics trumping policy. The president was more focused on campaign promises rather than the reality on the ground in Iraq. A tenuous situation was abandoned and a vacuum was created. That vacuum has been filled by two entities — ISIS and Iran. And so the once dominant America, which had vanquished Islamic terrorism, now finds itself relegated to a position of weakness and appeasement — and folks, that is exactly what Ayatollah Khamenei sees it to be — as well as the rest of the Islamic world.
