Congratulations, Barack, on being the first president to NEVER do this…

It’s Sunday and I’m sitting at the Hotel Cozumel and Resort having just finished three great days of diving. I came here with my Dive Pirates Foundation crew to find a little peace and serenity, and the Isla de Cozumel is a tranquil place and did not disappoint.

We were also able to define some TTPs (tactics, techniques and procedures) for spinal injury adaptive divers confined to wheel chairs at this location. Watching young Brian in the underwater world floating and drifting freely without a care just warmed one’s soul; he’s a testimony to the American never-quit spirit. I have to tell ya, three days of shallow reef diving — my deepest depth was 71 feet — is a good workout. Every dive was right at one hour, or at least 55 minutes; I was on nitrox. And even still, at one hour, I was still able to surface with 1000psi in the tank.

But, the highlight of day three was watching our young stud of a dive master and guide, Rudy, spot and kill lion fish. As you know, these are some very bad boogers that are purchased at exotic fish stores, but folks have dumped them into our ocean ecosystem, where they have no natural predators — and they breed like mad. This is similar to the pythons and Asian carp, two invasive species that have been introduced to the everglades and the Great Lakes, respectively — and who says conservatives don’t care about the environment?

Rudy is incredibly talented in spotting these rascals and five fork spearing them. What was intriguing was watching Rudy then search for either a moray eel hole or a lobster nest — and folks, you can’t hunt the lobsters here, they are huge — and then feed the lion fish to them. And boy howdy, that lion fish must taste really good because those eels and lobsters would come out of hiding for that chow!

That episode played out five times on day three, which got me thinking. Yes, I know, was supposed to be relaxing and drift diving away; sorry, my mind is always racing.

What if everyone that came here was able to catch and feed lion fish to the eels and lobsters? What if someone decided that it was OK not just to catch, kill and feed the lion fish, but other fish species as well. I was reminded of a Bible verse (ya know it was Sunday), 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (New International Version), “For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians gives us a good backdrop, along with the fantastic lion fish story, by which we can assess this day, Labor Day.

When we visit parks in the National Forests in America, there are signs that say, “Do Not Feed the Animals.” Now, I have no problem with killing and feeding an invasive species like lion fish to the eels and lobsters — that is not the point. We are speaking metaphorically here, gotta explain that to the liberal progressive socialists, they are not that smart and will deduce that I’m calling people animals, eels or lobsters — their beady little chucklehead brains cannot grasp the parallelisms. Paul was admonishing folks that everyone has to pull their own weight; progressive socialists, who often cherry pick verses from the Bible, embrace a concept of fairness, and fair share. They derive this from the maxim of Karl Marx, “from each according to his ability, to each according to their need.”

See, Rudy was doing an environmental service by killing those lion fish and finding a eco-beneficial means by which to dispose of them — feeding them to another. It was a situational endeavor, and Rudy actually speared a really big lion fish, which he took home for his own meal! He was not “giving” to the eels and lobsters according to their need — they still have to hunt for food in order to eat. They must labor. They just happened to be in the right place and the right time.

The age old adage from the philosopher Maimonides goes something like this, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, along with the rest of the clown car of socialist acolytes, believe wealth redistribution is a successful economic and governing concept. They’re not just about spearing the lion fish, but spearing everyone and feeding them to those whom they have selected — according to their definition of need.

So here we are on this Labor Day 2016, established originally and defined by the Department of Labor, as “the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

Now, that is funny when one considers the recent August 2016 workforce participation rate number. As reported by Business InsiderSince about the turn of the millennium, the labor-force participation rate, or the share of American civilians over the age of 16 who are working or looking for a job, has dropped pretty dramatically, with an acceleration in that drop after the 2008 financial crisis and the ensuing Great Recession.

There are several causes for that drop and for the rate to continue to be low. An analysis in August by the President’s Council of Economic Advisers suggests that about half of the drop comes from structural, demographic factors: the baby boomers, an immensely large cohort of Americans, are getting older and starting to retire.

The Council of Economic Advisers found that the other half of the drop in labor-force participation came from cyclical factors tied to the Great Recession. In addition to the normal falloff in participation seen in other recessions, the depth and severity of the Great Recession pushed millions of Americans to the sidelines, discouraging them from even looking for work.

In recent months, the labor-force participation rate has mostly ticked up, possibly indicating a tightening labor market as people who were previously discouraged from looking for work move back into the labor market, although the rate did fall in April and May.

According to the August jobs report, the labor force participation stayed flat at 62.8% in August, compared to 62.8% in July.

Ladies and Gents, let me submit to you that here we are on Barack Obama’s final Labor Day, and we have a workforce participation rate, telling the real story, that is right there at a forty — yes, 40 — year low. There are some 93 million Americans not in the workforce who are not counted. Just take a gander at the chart below, and you can easily see that the workforce under Obama has gone the opposite direction. And of course, we know whose fault that is…

labor force participation rate

The Obama legacy is one of more Americans being placed on food stamps and the poverty rolls — and we continue to hear about spearing fish to feed people, instead of enabling folks to fish for themselves. How much more “free” stuff can be promised? We have a GDP growth rate that is utterly anemic at last quarter’s 1.1%, and Obama will NEVER hit 3% GDP growth — the first recorded US president to never achieve that standard.

We keep hearing about 77 months of private sector job growth, but is this counting part-time employment? And even if you created one job, you can bet this administration would tout that as success.

So, here is it Labor Day, and the progressive socialists are still catching fish to give to folks, not encouraging them to learn to fish. And yes, in the Gospels, Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish, and fed a multitude…He had finished preaching and the folks were famished. Jesus did not open up a socialist grocery store where folks could return every day and get five loaves and two fish. However, we need a miracle in America as well, one that rids this great Nation of the scourge of the ideology of progressive socialism. Maybe, just maybe, if that were to happen, next year, we can truly celebrate Labor Day…because folks will be working, or can have enough cash in order to take a vacation to Cozumel, and watch Rudy feed lion fish to eels and lobsters.
