“May you live in interesting times” is said to be the English translation of an ancient Chinese curse. Whatever its provenance, there are indeed interesting times.

In fact, it is difficult to find something positive, when China is building manmade islands in the South China Sea and emplacing military armaments, fortifications, and basing. Or as we’ve shared, the UN reports that ISIS has grown by 70 percent over the last nine months with recruiting efforts in 100 countries. The response from the White House is that the fight against ISIS is not ours…ok. So we’re instead sitting at a negotiating table with Iran. And Vladimir Putin’s Russia, which has already taken the territory of a sovereign nation, has its sights set elsewhere.

Here in America we have urban areas becoming war zones because the political agenda of the day is to demonize our law enforcement. And our employment situation is staggeringly anemic. As Advisor Perspectives reports under the title ‘New Jobless Claims Disappoint with a 7K Increase’, ” In the week ending May 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 282,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week’s revised level…The four-week moving average at 271,500 is 5K above the 15-year interim low set last week.”

And only the oblivious low to no information voter and the Kool-aid drinking disciples of progressive socialism can believe our unemployment rate is 5.4 percent.

We also got the news today that our First Quarter 2015 GDP contracted to 0.7 percent “growth.” It’s bad enough that we believe annualized GDP growth of 2.4 percent is a new normal – that’s also a facade of hope and change economics. President Obama’s average GDP number for his presidency is 1.8 percent. Remember, a recession is defined by two consecutive economic quarters of negative economic activity — many Americans are certainly feeling a recession.

But you know what? Today is Friday, May 29th, 2015 and all that matters this day in the West family household is that our youngest daughter, Austen Brianna, is graduating from Atlantic Christian Academy today. My daughter, call sign “Bettlejuice,” arrived to South Florida 11 years ago as a little seven-year-old-girl from Ft. Hood Texas. There were some challenging moments, but she adapted and overcame all. Next week she’ll head off for a church mission trip because she has a heart for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Afterwards she’ll be joining Aubrey and me in Dallas as this fall, where she’ll begin studies at Dallas Christian College. And I won’t have Austen growing up in an America, or a world, where her Judeo-Christian faith belief results in her persecution or fear.

So with all that is happening, I am in a joyful mood. I had a nice morning run through Plantation, Florida. And with all that’s going on — I am more committed to fighting against the fundamental transformation of my country and the evil that exists in the world.

It is my duty to God, country, and family — the legacy that I pass on to Austen, Aubrey, and to your children and grandchildren. It has been a GREAT month of May for the West family. My niece Jaylynn graduated from high school over in Tampa on Thursday…and June has another graduation of great importance. My young nephew Major Herman Bernard West III will be graduating from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer’s Course at Ft. Leavenworth. Eighteen years ago, 1997, I graduated from the same venerable and historic institution.

After graduation, Angela and I loaded up our family and headed to Ft. Bragg. Bernie and Serena will load up with my grandniece and grandnephew and head off to Ft. Lewis, the place where I earned my commission in summer of 1982.

With all that is happening in America and our world, it is the legacy of the traditional American family that will sustain us through these times.

And that is the message hidden in the red, white and blue of Old Glory, our American flag, the symbol of our nation.

I’m quite sure Buck and Snooks West are smiling down from heaven, witnessing the success of the next generation. And to all of you who have celebrated graduations this season, congratulations, but ask yourself….what legacy will you impart?
